A black Labrador named Sata has become one of the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office's tools in child-exploitation investigations, using her training to locate electronic storage devices that might otherwise be missed. Over the last seven years, she has participated in more than 270 searches and made nearly 420 finds, according to the reporting cited below. That work has been associated with investigations involving around 40 people accused of child-predation offenses, but the figures do not mean every find resulted in an arrest or conviction.

Sata is trained to detect chemical compounds found in electronics with internal memory, according to the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office, which identifies her as an Electronic Storage Detection Dog. She can locate electronic devices of different types and sizes, according to reporting from FOX Carolina News. The sheriff's office says she is deployed during search warrants when electronic devices are central to an investigation, including child-exploitation cases.

A Nose for Evidence Human Eyes Can't Catch

FOX Carolina reported that Sata has found child sexual abuse material during some searches this year, work that has assisted local, state and federal investigators. The report said those agencies include the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division.

Brandon Letterman, a senior investigator with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office Internet Crimes Against Children Unit, works alongside Sata. He told FOX Carolina that her work may have helped investigators bring charges and may have affected or saved lives. The sheriff's office broadly describes its K-9 division as being used for the apprehension of criminals, the location of lost persons and the location of evidence of a crime.

What Sata’s totals measure

According to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office, Sata is trained to locate chemical compounds found in electronics with internal memory and is deployed during search warrants when electronic devices are central to an investigation. The reported total of more than 270 searches and nearly 420 finds covers the last seven years. Those are activity measures—searches conducted and items located—not a tally of arrests, convictions or cases in which Sata alone determined the outcome.

From Three Cases to Hundreds of Searches

Sata's introduction to Spartanburg law enforcement dates back to a January 2020 press conference, when she was unveiled as a black Lab trained to sniff out hidden devices used in child pornography and abuse cases, according to the Tryon Daily Bulletin. At the time, she and her handler, Deputy Brandon Letterman, had been trained by Matrix K-9 in Wallington, Connecticut, and Sata had only been on three cases.

The same 2020 report noted that Sata also serves as a therapy dog, considered capable of helping calm victims during difficult investigations. That dual role — search tool and comfort presence — has carried into her current caseload, which has grown from a handful of early cases to hundreds of searches and finds in the years since her debut.
