Tyrone Pope was riding a stand-up e-scooter southbound on Farmers Boulevard, less than a mile from his St. Albans home, when a van driver making a left turn struck him at 6:20 a.m. on Aug. 28. The 60-year-old spent nearly three weeks fighting for his life before he died from his injuries on Wednesday, Sept. 16, according to the NYPD.
Pope, who lived near 191st Street, was hit at the intersection of Merrick Boulevard and Farmers Boulevard in Jamaica, according to qns.com. Police said the driver of a Ram ProMaster 1500 van, a 57-year-old man, was attempting to turn left onto Merrick Boulevard when he collided with Pope. The driver remained at the scene, and no other injuries were reported in the crash.
NYPD officers from the 113th Precinct responded to a 911 call about the collision, and EMS transported Pope to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he was initially listed in stable condition. He held on for weeks before succumbing to his injuries earlier this month. The NYPD Highway District Collision Investigation Squad, which determined that the van collided with Pope during the left turn, is continuing to investigate. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
A Precinct's Fatality Numbers Tell a Mixed Story
Pope's death marks the 113th Precinct's first traffic fatality reported through Sept. 20, compared with four fatalities recorded over the same stretch in 2025 — a 75% year-over-year decline, per the same qns.com report. That drop offers some encouraging news for a precinct that covers Jamaica, St. Albans and surrounding neighborhoods, even as this latest death shows the risks e-scooter riders still face on the city's wide boulevards.
Citywide crash data, however, comes with a caveat. According to crashcount.nyc, the NYPD and NYC Open Data collision feed was last updated on June 15, 2026, and the city has not published crash records for dates after June 11 of that year — meaning any attempt to tally a complete citywide or precinct-wide fatality count for recent months runs into gaps in the public record.
Other Scooter Deaths Around Queens and Beyond
Pope's death follows a string of other fatal e-scooter crashes across the city this year. Jaikarran Seenarian, 46, died after being thrown from an electric stand-up scooter on Liberty Avenue near 109th Street in Queens on Aug. 24, according to crashcount.nyc. In Dyker Heights, 20-year-old Ajpop Walter died at Maimonides Medical Center on July 22 after a 56-year-old Toyota Sienna driver struck him while he rode a stand-up scooter on 14th Avenue, the same tracker reports.
A separate incident in late May underscored how scooter design itself has drawn scrutiny. Francis Delvalle was riding a Teverun Blade GT II scooter when he collided with Dmytro Stechenko on the Queensboro Bridge bike path on May 28, killing both men, according to Streetsblog NYC. The outlet reported that Teverun has since added a warning to its website following that crash.
No charges have been announced against the van driver who struck Pope, and police have not said whether a summons was issued. The NYPD Highway District Collision Investigation Squad's inquiry into the Aug. 28 crash remains open as investigators continue piecing together what happened at the Merrick and Farmers boulevards intersection.
