A St. Clair Shores woman wanted in a deadly hit-and-run that left a Warren man's body dragged nearly a mile down the street is now in custody after turning herself in at a Georgia sheriff's office. Valeria Ann Bostle, 36, is expected to face multiple felony charges in the death of 55-year-old Peter Chisolm earlier this month.
Police believe Bostle was behind the wheel of a red Chevrolet Impala that struck Chisolm on Schoenherr near Julius Street earlier this month, according to Fox 2 Detroit. Chisolm died from the crash, and investigators said his body was dragged for nearly a mile before finally coming to rest in the roadway at Doyle Avenue.
Bostle Surrenders in Georgia
Warren police said Bostle walked into the lobby of the Dekalb County Sheriff's Office in Decatur, Georgia, and surrendered before being taken into custody, per the same account. Authorities were then left to work out the logistics of returning her to Michigan to face the pending charges.
Those charges are expected to include homicide-manslaughter with a motor vehicle, involuntary homicide-manslaughter, and failing to stop at the scene of an accident, the station's report notes. It remains unclear how long Bostle evaded arrest before deciding to turn herself in, or what led her to a sheriff's office in Georgia.
How Other Michigan Hit-and-Run Cases Have Ended
Outcomes in similar Michigan fatal hit-and-run cases have varied widely. A driver convicted in a fatal Northville hit-and-run was sentenced to two years of probation with weekends in jail during the first year, according to ClickOnDetroit. In another case, a man was sentenced to a year in jail, as reported by Fox 2 Detroit.
Other cases have brought steeper consequences. A Farmington Hills man was sentenced to 6 to 15 years after pleading no contest to charges tied to an OWI and deadly hit-and-run, according to a report from WDIV. And a driver involved in a 2020 Warren crash that killed a 10-year-old girl was resentenced to one year in jail, per the Macomb Daily.
It has not been confirmed what final charges will be filed against Bostle, whether she will enter a plea, or how the extradition process from Georgia back to Michigan will unfold. Those details are expected to become clearer as the case moves through the court system.
