A St. Louis man is facing first-degree murder and armed criminal action charges nearly a month after a 34-year-old man was gunned down near a Regal Market in the Greater Ville neighborhood. Demetrice White, 46, was allegedly caught on security camera footage waiting at a nearby corner before Cedric Hubbard walked up unarmed and was shot multiple times, according to a probable cause statement.
According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded just after 1 p.m. on August 27 to the area of North Sarah Street and Maffitt Avenue after reports of a shooting near the market. Officers arriving on scene found a man in his 30s lying unconscious on the sidewalk, barely breathing and suffering from numerous gunshot wounds, police said. Officers rendered aid until paramedics arrived and rushed him to a hospital, where he later died, according to the department.
The shooting victim was identified by police as Hubbard, of St. Louis. The exact timing of the shooting has been described slightly differently across accounts: police said officers responded just after 1 p.m., while the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported the shooting happened around 1:30 p.m. in the 2800 block of North Sarah Street.
Security Footage and a Debit Card Receipt
Investigators say surveillance video from the area showed White waiting at the corner before Hubbard approached him unarmed, according to a probable cause statement cited by KMOV. That same statement alleges White then shot Hubbard multiple times before driving away from the scene.
Police confirmed that the car seen leaving the area belonged to White, the station's report notes. Investigators also determined that White had used his debit card to purchase items at the Regal Market shortly before the shooting, according to the same account.
Suspect Held Without Bond
White, 46, now faces charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Hubbard's death, per the probable cause statement referenced in the report. He is being held without bond as the case moves forward.
