Police and medics rushed to White Marsh Mall Friday evening after a stabbing near Macy's left at least one person injured, in what Baltimore County Police are still treating as a developing investigation. Officers were canvassing the area for a suspect they say is believed to have been involved in a fight that led to the stabbing.
Baltimore County Police Capt. Roy Taylor confirmed that officers have a description of the suspect and are actively searching the mall and surrounding area, according to WBAL News Radio. Investigators believe the stabbing stemmed from a fight, though the exact circumstances that led to the altercation have not yet been detailed. At least one person was injured, and police are continuing to gather information as the situation unfolds.
A Mall With a History of Weekend Trouble
Friday's incident is not the first time violence has erupted at White Marsh Mall. In March 2024, a retail employee inside one of the mall's major department stores was stabbed by a shoplifter and treated for non-life-threatening cut wounds, an incident reported by WBFF FOX 45. And about five and a half months before Friday's stabbing, Baltimore County Police arrested multiple juveniles and deployed pepper spray to break up a crowd at the mall after a planned social media “link-up” drew large groups of teens, as reported by WMAR-2 News.
That March disturbance prompted the Baltimore County Police Department to issue a public advisory urging parents to actively monitor their children's whereabouts and social media activity to prevent future organized mall meet-ups, according to WBAL. The mall itself enforces a mandatory Parental Guidance Required policy requiring visitors 17 and under to be accompanied by an adult 21 or older on Fridays and Saturdays after 5 p.m., a rule that was in effect during Friday evening's stabbing, according to White Marsh Mall's own posted policy.
Regional Pattern of Mall Security Crackdowns
White Marsh Mall is not alone in grappling with weekend disturbances. The nearby Avenue at White Marsh on Honeygo Boulevard enforces a year-round Youth Escort Policy requiring chaperones for teens under 17 from open to close every day, a rule updated in June 2024, per WBFF FOX 45. Mandatory chaperone policies and youth curfews have also expanded across other major Baltimore-area shopping centers, including Towson Town Center and The Mall in Columbia, in response to regional mall fights, according to CBS News.
Violence in the White Marsh retail corridor is not new, either. Back in September 2018, a fight near White Marsh Mall and The Avenue escalated into a stabbing and gunfire, prompting local officials at the time to demand stricter security measures, according to WJZ-TV. Primary law enforcement coverage for the mall falls to Baltimore County Police Department's Precinct 9, the White Marsh Precinct, located nearby at 8220 Perry Hall Boulevard, which allows for a relatively quick response time to incidents at the shopping center.
Ownership Change and Ongoing Questions
White Marsh Mall has been under new ownership since New York-based Spinoso Real Estate Group acquired the property for $190 million after serving as the mall's court-appointed receiver since January 2023. Opened in August 1981, the mall spans roughly 1.2 million square feet and is anchored by Macy's, JCPenney, and Boscov's, according to Wikipedia.
As of Friday evening, Baltimore County Police had not released the identity of the suspect, the exact nature of the underlying fight, or whether anyone has been taken into custody. A 20-year-old person was involved in an arrest or arrest-identification issue in connection with the incident.
