Garner police are investigating a stabbing that unfolded on the sidewalk right outside East Garner Elementary School on Jones Sausage Road around 2:20 a.m. Tuesday, injuring one person and leaving a stretch of the busy corridor taped off. Officers responded to a call about a person reportedly stabbed.
Two unidentified people were seen standing in front of the vehicle, possibly connected to the incident, per WRAL's breaking news tracker, though authorities have not said whether they were witnesses, suspects, or something else. As of Tuesday morning, authorities had not reported whether anyone was arrested, and the investigation remained ongoing.
Multiple Agencies Descend on the Scene
Garner Police, the Wake County Sheriff's Office, and forensic crews all responded to process the scene on the sidewalk in front of East Garner Elementary, the outlet reported. Police taped off the sidewalk outside the school as the investigation got underway, and the station reached out to Wake County schools to ask about any impact on morning drop-off.
The location itself is likely to unsettle parents and staff. East Garner Elementary was placed under an approximately 20-minute Code Red lockdown on February 25, 2026, after an 11-year-old student pulled a machete from a parent's car during a school meeting and advanced toward a staff member, as Hoodline previously reported. New Lockdown Language, Old Traffic Rules
Heading into this school year, Wake County Public School System retired its color-coded lockdown terms — Code Red, Yellow, and Green — in favor of a plain-language Standard Response Protocol built around actions like Hold, Secure, and Lockdown, according to the district's own announcement.
Part of a Rougher Year for Garner

If a suspect is eventually identified and charged, North Carolina law treats knife assaults seriously depending on intent and injury. Under General Statute § 14-32, an assault with a deadly weapon such as a knife can be prosecuted as a Class C felony when committed with intent to kill and causing serious injury, or a Class E felony when serious injury results without proven intent to kill, according to the North Carolina General Assembly's statutory language. The case remains under investigation.
