A menswear brand built for broad-shouldered athletes has planted its flag inside Oxmoor Center, and it brought bourbon with it. State & Liberty Clothing Company opened its new Louisville storefront, offering shoppers 21 and older a lounge area serving both coffee and bourbon while they browse.

The retailer, founded in 2015 in Ann Arbor, Michigan by former University of Michigan hockey player Lee Moffie and data analyst Steven Fisher, operates more than 30 stores. The company is named after an Ann Arbor street intersection, according to Wikipedia, which describes its apparel as engineered specifically for men with athletic, V-shaped physiques, using a moisture-wicking four-way stretch fabric blend of 92 percent polyester and 8 percent spandex. That blend is part of the brand's focus on athletic-fit clothing.

Inside, the lounge area doubles as both a coffee bar and a bourbon pour spot, a hospitality-forward touch that fits neatly into the mall's broader strategy of pairing shopping with hangout space.

Bourbon Pours Come With State Rules Attached

Kentucky law limits how generous that bourbon lounge can actually be. Under Kentucky Revised Statutes (KRS 243.0307), specified license holders with a sampling license may offer complimentary alcohol samples during regular business hours, capped at one ounce of distilled spirits per customer per day, according to the Kentucky Legislature. Sampling events under that framework must also be limited to a four-hour window and reported in advance.

The Louisville location is called Shop 48. ICSC reported 26 retail locations in 2024.

From Hockey Locker Rooms to Mall Storefronts

Professional hockey players served as some of the earliest fit testers for the brand's shirt prototypes, according to Wikipedia.

Landing In a Mall Betting Big On Experience

Oxmoor Center is a shopping mall.

The mall has leaned further into that experiential approach in recent months. Oxmoor Center made its outdoor dog park on The Green lawn space near Topgolf permanent in August, following a summer trial run, Hoodline previously reported in its piece on the mall's permanent, fee-free dog park. That space also allows visitors to carry drinks purchased from nearby mall eateries under an open-container policy, a detail that echoes the same bourbon-and-lounge sensibility now showing up inside State & Liberty's new store.
