A stolen vehicle chase through the Bellaire area reached speeds of about 120 mph before the suspect attempted to abandon the vehicle near a wooded area, returned to it and continued fleeing, then crashed into another car on Bissonnet Street. Harris County Precinct 7 deputies say the entire pursuit lasted roughly five minutes and covered about six to seven miles, ending with the suspect in handcuffs, a hospital evaluation and a booking at the Harris County Jail.
According to Fox 26 Houston, the pursuit began after a deputy spotted the stolen vehicle traveling on Scott Street near the 610 West Loop. Deputies said the car then reached about 120 mph as it sped along the loop, with the suspect weaving into the left lane and later driving without headlights.
A Sprint Through a Residential Neighborhood
The chase eventually spilled into a residential neighborhood before the suspect continued fleeing on Bissonnet Street, where he struck another vehicle. Deputies said a DPS helicopter assisted during the pursuit.
The driver of the vehicle that was hit had just finished a long restaurant shift, per the same account. He was wearing his seat belt when the impact deployed his airbags, and he later reported soreness in his left shoulder, but he was otherwise unharmed.
Suspect Tried to Vanish, Then Came Back
Before the crash, the suspect tried to abandon the disabled vehicle near a wooded area, apparently hoping to slip away on foot. He returned to the vehicle after hearing the DPS helicopter circling overhead, deputies said, and was quickly taken into custody once he did.
Deputies said the stolen vehicle was connected to a burglary of a habitation in North Houston, tying the chase to a separate residential crime elsewhere in the city. The suspect was taken to a hospital for evaluation before being booked into the Harris County Jail, and officials said he had both a criminal history and a history of fleeing from police. He now faces multiple felony charges, though authorities had not publicly released his name.
Another Houston-Area High-Speed Chase
This is not the only recent Houston-area pursuit to hit triple-digit speeds. A separate chase involving a reported stolen car ended in a fatal crash near the Westpark Tollway over the summer, with scanner traffic indicating speeds around 120 mph before the collision, according to KHOU. Court documents in that case described three people inside the stolen car when it crashed on Highway 6 near Westpark, as reported by ABC13.
The Bissonnet Street driver reported soreness in his shoulder, while a separate Houston-area pursuit ended in a fatal crash.
