A Las Vegas ska festival that started in a Knights of Columbus fraternal hall eight years ago is closing out its 2026 run this Saturday with a reunion show 12 years in the making. Summer of Ska will bring skacore, pop-punk, emo and Latin ska acts to Red Dwarf and Grey Witch on September 5, capped by punk band Social Control playing its first show in over a decade.
The festival was born in 2014 as a scrappy, all-ages alternative to the Valley's typically 21-plus club circuit, according to Las Vegas Weekly. Founder Tommy Nicholson said he built the event because there were so few local shows that welcomed fans under 21, and the festival has since moved through several residences on the east side of Las Vegas before growing into a six-city Southwestern tour spanning Nevada, Arizona and Texas. Nicholson books bands the same way he discovered the genre himself: by finding music he likes and connecting with artists over a shared love of ska.
From a Fraternal Hall to a Six-City Circuit
What began at the Knights of Columbus hall has grown into an all-ages, multi-city tour that now folds in touring acts from Seattle, Los Angeles, New Mexico and beyond alongside regional Southwestern bands. This year's tour expanded with stops in Phoenix, Tucson, El Paso, Flagstaff and Albuquerque before wrapping in Las Vegas, per Good Girlfriend Records' event listings. Nicholson also founded Good Girlfriend Records, the Las Vegas label and DIY promotion outfit that books the tour and focuses on all-ages punk, ska and emo events across the Southwest, according to SceneSyncLV.
Nicholson is not just a promoter watching from the sidelines. He is also the rhythm guitarist for Los Ataskados, a self-described “psyskadelic” Las Vegas ska-punk band that released its debut album, Redemption, through Good Girlfriend Records in August 2022, Las Vegas Weekly has reported. For Nicholson, inclusivity is a stated priority, and he has described ska simply as “unity music.”
Saturday's Lineup Splits Between Two Vegas Venues
The Las Vegas leg unfolds in two parts. The all-ages portion kicks off at noon at Red Dwarf, a 21-plus, non-smoking, non-gambling punk-rock tiki bar at 1305 Vegas Valley Drive that opened in December 2021 and serves Detroit-style pizza alongside more than 90 varieties of rum. That daytime session is free to attend.
The action then shifts to Grey Witch, the sister venue Red Dwarf owner Russell Gardner opened at 722 W. Sunset Road in Henderson in May 2025, featuring post-apocalyptic decor, taxidermy art and craft cocktails alongside its own Detroit-style pizza. The all-ages Grey Witch show starts at 3 p.m. and costs between $25 and $30. La Chapuza, a band from El Paso, is scheduled to play at 5:20 p.m., followed by The Odd Advantage, a band from Hemet, California that blends ska and punk, at 8:25 p.m. Social Control, which formed in 2005, is set to headline at 7:05 p.m. with its first show in 12 years.
A Bigger Lineup Beyond the Announced Sets
The Grey Witch showcase also folds in Los Angeles Latin ska group Raskahuele, along with Warsaw Poland Bros and Undisputed World Champions, according to event listings posted to Facebook. In total, organizers describe the Las Vegas showcase as a 12-hour, 17-act event spanning multiple ska and punk subgenres.
This is not the first time the festival has drawn veteran national acts to the Valley. Summer of Ska VII in August 2025 featured New Jersey reggae-ska mainstays Hub City Stompers headlining a 14-band lineup that toured through Los Angeles, Mesa and Las Vegas, with the local leg also landing at Grey Witch, Las Vegas Weekly reported at the time.
Grassroots Ska Meets a Bigger Vegas Stage
Summer of Ska's DIY, all-ages ethos has coexisted with a bigger commercial moment for the genre in Las Vegas. No Doubt announced a six-night residency at Sphere Las Vegas set for May 2026, a booking that put Gwen Stefani's ska-rooted band on one of the city's most prominent stages, as Hoodline reported. Good Girlfriend Records has also paired ska with community causes before, hosting Ska for Planet Earth at The Space in April 2024, an Earth Day concert that combined six ska bands with sustainable agriculture vendors and trash pickup initiatives.
The Valley's growing infrastructure for punk and ska history extends beyond live shows. The Punk Rock Museum in Downtown Las Vegas, which opened in 2023, offers guided tours led by veteran musicians including Less Than Jake frontman Chris DeMakes, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Between the museum, Sphere and grassroots showcases like Summer of Ska, the city's ska and punk footprint keeps widening even as Nicholson's festival stays rooted in the all-ages, community-first spirit that started it in a fraternal hall eight years ago.
