An apparent pipe bomb found inside a car parked at a gas station forced Irvine police to evacuate a nearby shopping center while a county bomb squad worked to render the device safe.
According to CBS Los Angeles, Irvine police were responding to a report of suspicious circumstances when officers located two men connected to the call near a gas station at 3800 Portola Parkway. After arriving, officers arrested both men on suspicion of drug possession, and one of them was found to have an outstanding warrant, the station reported. When officers searched the men's car, they discovered what appeared to be a pipe bomb inside.
The gas station sits adjacent to Orchard Hills Shopping Center, an Irvine Company retail center.
Bomb Squad Called In to Render Device Safe
Once officers located the suspected explosive, the Irvine Police Department contacted the Orange County Sheriff's Department bomb squad, per the same CBS Los Angeles report. County bomb technicians spent roughly two hours examining the item and rendering it safe before moving it to a different location, the station noted.
The Orange County Sheriff's Department's Hazardous Devices Section can respond to government jurisdictions across Orange County, including Irvine, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department. The department describes the section's bomb technicians, detection dogs and immediate-response capability.
Legal Exposure Could Hinge on What Investigators Find
California law addresses possession of a destructive device under Penal Code Section 18710, according to Cron Israels and Stark. Penal Code Section 18715 addresses possessing materials to make a destructive device, while Section 18720 addresses manufacturing one, according to the same legal source. It remains unclear which statute, if any, prosecutors will pursue, since authorities have not publicly said whether the device was functional or what materials it contained.
A Rare Disruption in a City Known for Its Safety Record
The incident is a notable disruption for a city that has built its reputation on public safety. Irvine was designated the safest city of its size in the country based on FBI violent-crime-per-capita statistics for 18 consecutive years through 2023, according to the City of Irvine, a distinction that underscores how uncommon severe public-safety scares are in the local community.
In March 2024, an explosion in Orange County injured 16 people, according to KTLA.
Investigators have not said whether the two men arrested at the Irvine gas station intended to target the shopping center or anyone else, and that question remains unresolved as the case moves forward.
