An SUV rolled off Kirkwood Pike and into a cornfield in Eden Township on Thursday morning, flattening rows of crops and leaving one person injured. The crash happened around 11:41 a.m. in the 700 block of the rural Lancaster County roadway, and it came almost exactly an hour after a nearly identical rollover a few miles away.
According to WGAL News 8, firefighters had to remove the SUV's windshield to free a trapped occupant in the earlier Shady Road crash, not the Kirkwood Pike crash. The Quarryville Fire Company said one person was injured in the crash. Emergency crews cleared the scene within two hours of arriving, per the station's report.
The Kirkwood Pike crash was actually the second rollover southern Lancaster County's volunteer firefighters handled within about an hour that morning. At 10:44 a.m., Rescue 57 firefighters from the Quarryville Fire Company responded to a rollover on Shady Road in neighboring East Drumore Township, where crews stabilized the vehicle and also removed its windshield to extricate the trapped driver, according to a Quarryville Fire Company Facebook post.
Fire Police Held the Scene for Nearly Two Hours
Once the Kirkwood Pike crash was reported at 11:41 a.m., fire police from both the Quarryville Fire Company and the Bart Township Fire Company worked the 700 block for one hour and 45 minutes, directing traffic around the wreck while firefighters managed the scene, the same Facebook post noted. That timeline lines up with the roughly two-hour window WGAL reported before crews cleared out.
Kirkwood Pike is the local name for Pennsylvania Route 472, a 20.8-mile two-lane state highway that runs from the Maryland border through rural stretches of Chester and Lancaster counties into Quarryville, according to AARoads. Eden Township sits within southern Lancaster County's farming belt, where narrow shoulders on roads like Route 472 often give way almost immediately to cultivated cornfields, which helps explain why an off-road crash there ends up among the crops rather than in a ditch.
A Road With a History of Serious Wrecks
Thursday's rollover isn't the first serious incident along this stretch of Route 472. In April 2024, Pennsylvania State Police investigated a fatal collision at the intersection of Kirkwood Pike and Noble Road involving a motorcycle and a Ford Edge SUV, as reported by FOX43. That same month, a falling roadside tree struck a moving car along Kirkwood Pike and injured two people, prompting a local resident to contact the WITF Watchdog for information about addressing hazardous trees, according to WITF.
The back-to-back rollovers also underscore the load placed on the region's volunteer fire departments. The Quarryville Fire Company, known as Station 57, is an all-volunteer department covering fire, extrication, and rescue calls across Eden, East Drumore, and Colerain townships in southern Lancaster County.
