Residents around Sykesville were told to stay inside their homes Wednesday afternoon as police combed the grounds of Springfield Hospital Center searching for a man. Three Carroll County schools locked their doors as a precaution while the search played out on the sprawling, historic hospital campus.
Piney Ridge Elementary, Sykesville Middle School, and Carrolltowne Elementary were all placed on secure status due to police activity in the area, according to WBAL NewsRadio. Carroll County Public Schools described secure status as the standard response protocol for an external situation occurring near a school, and the station reported that Carroll County officials sent an alert to the community urging residents to stay inside during the search.
Under that protocol, secure-status schools will not allow anyone to enter or exit the buildings until the situation is resolved. The measure mirrors Carroll County Public Schools policy guidelines, which define Secure status as a response initiated during external threats or nearby police activity, requiring exterior doors to stay locked while the district monitors the situation. District officials said there was no danger to students or school staff and promised to communicate with families once the situation had been resolved.
Police Focus Search on Sprawling Hospital Campus
The search centered on the Springfield Hospital Center complex, the same state psychiatric facility that has sat on southern Carroll County's landscape for well over a century. The hospital was established in 1896 on a former 4,000-acre estate, according to the Maryland Department of Health. The campus's sprawling layout gives searching officers considerable ground to cover.
The campus has drawn law enforcement attention before. In April, the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal was treating two fires at vacant buildings on the Springfield Hospital Center campus as a possible arson case, a case Hoodline covered in twin blazes at old hospital. State Hospitals Running Near Capacity
The search comes amid broader strain on Maryland's psychiatric hospital system. In May, the Maryland Department of Health reported that the state's five adult psychiatric hospitals, including Springfield, were operating at an average of 95 percent capacity, a level that has pushed wait times for court-ordered minimum-security admissions to two to four months, according to the Maryland Daily Record. That same reporting noted that under Maryland Criminal Procedure Section 3-106, defendants found incompetent to stand trial must be transferred into a designated state psychiatric facility within 10 business days of a court ruling.
Maryland has also been investing in bed capacity at the Sykesville campus itself. State budget documentation from March showed the Maryland Department of Health set aside $1 million in fiscal year 2026 operating funds to renovate Unit C in the Hitchman Building at Springfield Hospital Center, expanding inpatient psychiatric beds as the state grapples with realigning patients from other facilities under renovation, per the Maryland Department of Budget and Management.
