A Tampa resident's sharp eye turned into a quick arrest Monday night after deputies caught a man allegedly testing door handles along Amberdale Court, then found a backpack loaded with burglary tools and identification cards belonging to other people. Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to the apartment complex at 7:29 p.m. on September 21 after a resident reported someone tampering with the locks.
According to Tampa Free Press, the resident watched an unfamiliar man try several door handles, including one apartment that clearly was not his. When deputies arrived, 26-year-old Semaj Johnson ran, prompting a foot pursuit that ended with deputies taking him into custody.
What Investigators Found in the Backpack
Once Johnson was detained, investigators searched his backpack and located burglary tools inside, the outlet reports. Alongside the tools, they also found identification cards belonging to other individuals, raising questions about how Johnson came to possess them.
Johnson was booked on loitering or prowling, possession of burglary tools, resisting an officer without violence, and four counts of unlawful possession of the personal identification of another, per the same account. The loitering or prowling charge in Florida hinges on a legal standard set decades ago: a 1989 state appellate ruling, E.B. v. State, held that such a conviction requires proof the defendant's conduct was unusual for a law-abiding person under circumstances creating justifiable alarm for people or property nearby.
Sheriff Credits Resident's 911 Call
Sheriff Chad Chronister credited the initial caller with helping deputies make a quick arrest, and he thanked the resident who reported the suspicious activity, according to the report. Chronister said deputies stayed alert and acted quickly to keep neighborhoods safe.
Chronister also said community partnership makes Hillsborough County safer for everyone, the outlet notes. It's a message aimed squarely at residents like the one on Amberdale Court whose call set the whole chain of events in motion.
