More than 1,200 people attended a Girls in Aviation event at Tampa International Airport on Saturday, according to Tampa Bay 28, which first reported the local turnout. Organized by Women in Aviation Tampa Bay, the event focused on introducing young attendees to aviation-related career possibilities.
Aircraft were available for viewing in hangars and outdoors, according to Women in Aviation Tampa Bay. The chapter says its work includes encouraging and advancing women across aviation careers, along with hosting educational and networking activities during the year.
A national program with international reach
The Tampa gathering was part of Women in Aviation International’s 12th annual Girls in Aviation Day. The organization describes the program as an opportunity for young people to learn about aviation and explore related career paths; this year’s observance took place on the same Saturday as the Tampa event, according to Women in Aviation International.
Girls in Aviation Day began in 2015 with 32 events and 3,200 participants, and the program has expanded since then, according to HeliHub.com. The trade outlet reported that about 200 events were planned across 27 countries on four continents this year, with projected attendance of 34,500. Those figures are national program projections, distinct from the reported Tampa attendance.

A 2022 report from the Women in Aviation Advisory Board cautioned that FAA civil-airmen certificate statistics do not capture the full aviation workforce, including occupations beyond the certificate database. That limitation means certificate figures alone do not provide a complete measure of women’s representation or its change over the past decade, according to the Women in Aviation Advisory Board.
According to Women in Aviation Tampa Bay, its year-round pipeline also includes educational seminars, mentorship programs, scholarships, networking events and volunteer opportunities designed to support women in aviation.
