The wetter pattern is forecast to continue Monday and Tuesday, with highs near 89 degrees and afternoon or evening storm chances around 70%. These are forecast possibilities, not confirmed rainfall or storm impacts.
Past Tampa Bay Storms Show a Range of Hazards
Recent local history illustrates why a routine-looking summer forecast can still include multiple hazards. NWS Tampa Bay records say a January 9, 2024 storm system produced an EF-1 tornado in Northern Hillsborough County, an EF-0 tornado in Pinellas County and damaging straight-line winds in Sarasota County. That event was a separate storm system and does not establish that similar damage will occur this weekend.
The same NWS records describe several rounds of heavy rainfall across West Central and Southwest Florida from June 10 through 13, 2024, after a tropical disturbance and surge of moisture moved northward. That comparison shows how rainfall can accumulate over multiple rounds, but it is not evidence that this weekend will produce the same totals.
For broader seasonal context, NWS Tampa Bay’s thunderstorm climatology identifies late May through June as the period when severe storms are most likely, with hail, damaging winds, heavy rain and frequent lightning among the common hazards. It also describes mid-September through early October as a “wind down” period with greater rainfall variability because of potential tropical systems and early-fall cold fronts. Those climatological patterns provide background, not a prediction of this weekend’s outcome.
Localized Flooding Remains a Practical Concern
Even scattered storms can create short-duration trouble in low-lying or poorly drained areas. The City of Tampa Stormwater Division says localized flooding is the city’s most frequent type of flooding during rainy-season thunderstorms and tropical storms, and that limited topographic relief can slow drainage.
The city also says its stormwater maps identify flood-hazard and localized-flooding areas that may not appear on FEMA flood maps. Hillsborough County’s flood-zone guidance directs residents to FEMA maps and the county’s flood-zone viewer to assess property flood risk. Neither resource predicts whether this weekend’s storms will cause flooding, but both can help residents understand their local exposure.
For now, outdoor venues and residents should monitor updated forecasts and be prepared to move indoors if storms approach.
