A 73-year-old woman is dead and a 2-year-old boy suffered minor injuries after a pickup truck driven by a 16-year-old boy turned left across northbound lanes of U.S. 1 and collided with an SUV Friday morning, September 18, 2026, near Las Calinas Boulevard, just north of International Golf Parkway. All four people involved in the crash were residents of St. Augustine.
The collision happened around 11:19 a.m. Friday, September 18, 2026, according to Action News Jax. The pickup truck had been traveling south in the left-turn lane on U.S. 1 north of the intersection, while the SUV was headed north in the left travel lane south of it, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, as reported by News4JAX. Troopers said the teen driver failed to observe the approaching SUV as he attempted to turn left, and the front of the SUV struck the right side of the pickup.
The 73-year-old woman was riding as a passenger in the SUV and died at a local hospital, per FHP. The SUV's 38-year-old female driver was seriously injured, while a 2-year-old boy also riding in the SUV suffered only minor injuries, according to the same report. FHP said the pickup driver was not injured in the crash.
Airlift Response and Highway Shutdown
St. Johns County Fire Rescue personnel airlifted the 38-year-old driver and the 2-year-old boy from the scene to a hospital, according to SJ Citizen. All northbound lanes of U.S. 1 at Las Calinas Boulevard were shut down. Traffic was diverted for several hours while troopers conducted crash reconstruction at the scene.
Under Florida Statute § 316.122, a driver intending to turn left within an intersection must yield the right-of-way to oncoming vehicles close enough to constitute an immediate hazard, with failure to do so classified as a moving violation, according to Florida's statutes published on Online Sunshine. Whether troopers will issue a citation or pursue any formal action against the teen driver remains unclear. Separately, Florida Statute § 322.16 restricts 16-year-old licensed drivers from driving between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless accompanied by an adult driver or traveling to or from work, a curfew rule that did not apply here since the crash occurred in morning daylight hours, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
