The Picklr's Round Rock pickleball club has closed its doors, shutting down in early September after just over a year and a half of operation on South I-35. The owners chose not to renew their lease at the Round Rock Crossing retail center, ending the run of a facility that once billed itself as a hub for AI-assisted coaching, leagues and tournaments.
The closure was confirmed by Community Impact, which reported that the business shut down at its address at 3021 S. I-35, Suite 240, after opening there in January 2025. Rather than shutting down the brand entirely in the area, The Picklr consolidated its Round Rock operations into its Austin West and Oak Hill locations, according to the outlet's reporting.
When the Round Rock club opened, it arrived with plenty of fanfare. The location featured eight indoor courts with outdoor surfacing, along with AI coaching, private event areas, a pro shop, league play, tournaments, court reservations and locker rooms with showers, the same Community Impact report on the opening noted. Monthly memberships started at $89, giving local players a dedicated, amenity-heavy option that hadn't existed in that stretch of Round Rock before.
A Rapid Rise Before the Retreat
The Round Rock club wasn't a small bet for the company. Per CoStar, The Picklr had signed a lease for 24,000 square feet at the Round Rock Crossing Shopping Center, making it the company's ninth Texas location at the time and one of more than 60 nationwide. That kind of footprint underscored how aggressively the pickleball franchise model had been expanding into Central Texas before this particular site went dark.
The shutdown comes even as the sport itself keeps climbing nationally. According to SFIA, 24.3 million Americans played pickleball in 2025, and participation grew 171.8% between 2022 and 2025 by the same measure. That surge in interest hasn't guaranteed staying power for every dedicated facility chasing it, though.
Not the Only Local Pickleball Shake-Up
Round Rock's pickleball map has been shifting in other ways too. A future 15,510-square-foot pickleball facility has had project information filed near Red Bud Lane in east Round Rock, the same source's reporting on that separate project shows, suggesting the sport's local footprint may simply be moving rather than shrinking overall.
Austin has seen its own pickleball turbulence recently as well. Austin Pickle Ranch, a pickleball court facility with two locations in the city, was reported by FOX 7 Austin to be closing its West Sixth Street location because of city zoning issues, a reminder that even as the sport grows, individual venues in the region are proving vulnerable to lease terms, zoning rules and shifting business decisions.
For now, players who had built routines around the Round Rock courts are being directed toward The Picklr's Austin West and Oak Hill locations, per the company's consolidation of operations there. What becomes of the vacated Round Rock Crossing space remains to be seen.
