The Red Hook, a popular independent coffee shop in metro Detroit, plans to close its Midtown location at 3965 Woodward on Sept. 26, ending a three-year run in the space. The shop has occupied the address since it took over the former Great Lakes Coffee spot, which shut down amid a labor dispute in 2022.
Red Hook management announced the closing on Instagram, according to The Detroit News, writing, “After three wonderful years, we’ve made the difficult decision to close our Midtown shop.” The company added, “Thank you for your support, your loyalty, and the memories you’ve helped us create over these past three years,” expressing gratitude to the customers who supported the shop during its run. The Detroit News reported that it did not receive a response from the owner regarding the decision.
A Long-Awaited Opening In A Space With History
The Midtown shop occupies the former Great Lakes Coffee space at 3965 Woodward Ave. In late 2022, Metro Times reported the planned move and said the location would partner with Parlor Coffee Roasters, offering rotating guest-roaster selections and retail whole coffee beans.
The coffee shop's footprint included two other Detroit locations and a Ferndale shop.

What Remains Open
The Red Hook’s Midtown closure does not appear to affect the rest of its metro Detroit footprint. The company still operates a Detroit location at 8025 Agnes, another Detroit shop at 2761 E. Jefferson, and a Ferndale location at 220 W. Nine Mile. The Woodward Avenue storefront will go dark on Sept. 26 after three years as a Red Hook location.
