A gourmet toast chain out of Washington, D.C. is set to open its first San Antonio location inside Culebra Commons on the Far West Side, moving into a shopping center space along one of the city's busiest retail corridors. The buildout is expected to run $350,000 for a 1,308-square-foot suite, with construction slated to begin November 2, 2026 and wrap by January 29, 2027.
Toastique will take over Suite 301 at 6626 W. Loop 1604 N., the same complex previously occupied by bubble tea chain Gong Cha, according to a permit filing detailed by Zabalist. As CultureMap San Antonio reports, Gong Cha closed its Far West Side shop in late August after signing a franchising deal back in July, and Toastique is now stepping into that vacated footprint. The station's report notes Toastique offers eight toast varieties served on mini cutting boards with decorative garnishes, alongside a salmon power bowl, protein waffles, smoothie bowls, grab-and-go salads, housemade granola bars, and foamed coffees finished with latte art hearts.
A Fast-Growing Chain Nearing a Major Milestone
Toastique was founded in 2017 by former Division I athlete Brianna Keefe, and per the same account, the chain is now approaching its 100th opening nationwide, with 226 territories spoken for across the United States. That growth trajectory tracks with figures reported by LoopNet, which found the brand had 57 operating units in 2025, with its operational footprint increasing 58 percent year over year heading into 2026.
That same LoopNet reporting, drawing on Toastique's 2026 Franchise Disclosure Document, found that franchised locations open two or more years generated $745,577 in average gross sales in 2025, with top performers reaching $1.12 million and an average customer ticket of $21.27. Initial startup investment for a franchisee ranges between $471,152 and $890,846, according to the same filing.
Why Culebra Commons Made the Cut
The Culebra Commons buildout sits within a larger 60-acre mixed-use development along Loop 1604 and Culebra Road, according to Fulcrum Development, which describes more than 2 million square feet of surrounding retail.
Toastique's standard footprint runs 1,200 to 1,400 square feet, and the model eliminates complex commercial kitchen equipment like hoods, fryers, and cooking ovens, according to Toastique's own site. Locations typically operate with three to five employees per shift, the company notes — a lean structure that fits a broader industry shift. Full-service restaurant labor costs consumed a median 36.5 percent of revenue heading into 2026, pushing concepts toward sub-1,500-square-foot footprints and chefless kitchen setups aimed at net margins of 8 to 12 percent, according to research from Breadless.
Part of a Broader Texas Push
San Antonio joins a growing list of Texas markets for the chain, following an Austin location and a Willow Park café in Parker County that launched in April 2026, according to CultureMap Fort Worth. North Texas outposts also include Addison, Flower Mound, and Dallas' West Village.
The chain has also leaned on a familiar opening-day playbook in other Texas markets, offering $50 in reward dollars to the first 100 paying customers — a promotion used during the Willow Park debut. Whether a similar promotion accompanies the San Antonio opening has not been reported.
A Far West Side Breakfast Option
Toastique's arrival brings a new morning and daytime dining option to the Far West Side's Loop 1604 corridor.
For now, the timeline hinges on the November construction start holding and the January 2027 completion target being met, per the Texas filing. San Antonio diners on the Far West Side will have to wait until early 2027 to find out whether the toast lives up to the hype building around the Culebra Commons buildout.
