Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Todd Rundgren and Grammy-winning Texas trio Los Lonely Boys will headline a traveling concert series called American Revival when it lands at San Antonio's Tobin Center for the Performing Arts on October 5. The show pairs national headliners with local talent and wraps musical performances around conversations about bringing communities together.
As reported by CultureMap San Antonio, American Revival was created by filmmaker Nicholas Ma, son of cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who has previously toured the country with his documentaries Won't You Be My Neighbor? and Leap of Faith. Ma directed the 2024 film Leap of Faith, which followed a dozen Christian leaders navigating ideological divides in Michigan, and produced the acclaimed 2018 Mister Rogers documentary, according to NYU Tisch School of the Arts. That thematic throughline of bridging social divides carries directly into the American Revival format, where musical sets alternate with spoken-word segments rather than functioning as a straightforward concert.
A Lineup Spanning Genres and Generations
Los Lonely Boys, the Texas-based trio of brothers Henry, JoJo, and Ringo Garza, earned the 2005 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for their breakout hit “Heaven,” a record the siblings recorded at Willie Nelson's Pedernales Studio, per the Recording Academy. Rundgren's own path to recognition took a stranger turn: inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021 after being eligible since 1993, he did not attend the Cleveland ceremony because of his ongoing tour. He has long publicly criticized the Hall's selection process, according to Ultimate Classic Rock. Also on the bill is Arrested Development, the conscious hip-hop group fronted by Speech that picked up two Grammy Awards in 1993, including Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for “Tennessee,” per MN2S. The San Antonio bill, per CultureMap's reporting, rounds out with singer-songwriter Lisa Morales, Daniel Anastasio, Mariachi Los Galleros de San Antonio, Valerie June, Larisa Martínez, and actress Alfre Woodard. American Revival curates a different lineup for each city on its route, according to the American Revival tour's own materials, which describe the show ending with every performer assembling onstage together.

Beyond the music, the format includes a keynote address and what organizers call a “call to love” delivered by Nicholas Ma, aimed at addressing political and cultural polarization through community dialogue. The San Antonio stop will also include what CultureMap describes as a Festival of Helpers, showing attendees ways to get involved locally, with San Antonio community partners participating before and after the performances. The release announcing the show did not identify which local partners would be involved.

Local musician Lisa Morales, who joins the American Revival bill, is also slated to headline her own show at the Tobin Center's Carlos Alvarez Studio Theater on October 18, featuring guest artists David Hidalgo and John Doe, according to Tobin Center Presents.
