A specialty chemical manufacturer in Northwest Ohio is shutting its doors for good, wiping out more than 80 jobs in a closure that will unfold in phases over the next ten months. Perstorp Polyols Inc. has told state officials it is closing its plant at 600 Matzinger Road, with layoffs starting around November 2 and continuing until July 1, 2027.
The company disclosed the closure in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filing submitted to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services on September 2, according to Cleveland.com. The filing states that all workers at the plant have already been notified, and that the layoffs are permanent.
Perstorp Polyols is a specialty chemical manufacturer owned by Petronas Chemicals Group, a company headquartered in Malaysia, per the same filing details reported by the outlet. Company officials say the shutdown is part of a broader effort to consolidate manufacturing operations across the United States, though the WARN notice does not spell out which other facilities might absorb that production.
Who Loses Their Jobs, and When
The cuts will hit a wide swath of the Toledo workforce, touching production, maintenance, management and administrative staff, the report notes. Among those losing their positions are 14 process operators.
In total, more than 80 jobs are being eliminated at the Matzinger Road site. According to an attribution to Chemanalyst.com cited in the report, the Toledo layoffs account for 70% of Perstorp's entire U.S. workforce — a scale that suggests the Toledo plant has functioned as one of the company's primary American operations.
A Pattern Playing Out Across the Region
Toledo's plant closure adds to a string of recent chemical-industry shutdowns around Ohio and neighboring Pennsylvania. In Beaver County, Pennsylvania, a chemical plant along the Ohio River laid off 140 workers when production stopped on January 3, 2025, ahead of a permanent closure in 2026, according to WPXI. And in the Cincinnati area, INEOS announced a permanent closure at its Addyston facility, with layoffs also occurring in phases, as reported by Local 12.
For now, the timeline laid out in the WARN filing is what Toledo workers and city officials have to go on: staggered layoffs beginning in early November and stretching through next summer. What becomes of the Matzinger Road site once production winds down, and whether any of Perstorp's remaining U.S. operations will pick up the slack, remains unclear.
