Two men are dead and a third person is critically injured after a red pickup truck traveling at a high rate of speed slammed into a commercial box truck that was turning left near Bishop Lane and Tile Factory Lane in Louisville's Watterson Park neighborhood. The crash happened around 6:15 p.m. Monday in the 4500 block of Poplar Level Road, and emergency crews had to extricate victims from the pickup truck after the impact.
According to the Louisville Courier Journal, LMPD Sixth Division officers arrived to find a two-vehicle collision involving the pickup and the box truck, which was attempting a left turn at the time, based on preliminary investigation and witness statements. The pickup truck driver suffered critical, life-threatening injuries and was taken to UofL Hospital, LMPD spokesperson Aaron Ellis told the paper. A male back-seat passenger in the pickup was pronounced dead at the scene, while a male front-seat passenger died after arrival, according to the same report. The two men inside the box truck told police they were not injured.
Minutes before the crash, someone reported a red pickup truck driving recklessly on Poplar Level Road, and per the Courier Journal's account of Ellis's remarks, LMPD believes it was the same vehicle involved in the collision. Investigators say the truck was headed northbound at a high rate of speed at the time of impact. The department's traffic unit is now investigating, the station's report notes, wedging emergency crews' extrication effort — described by WHAS11 — into the broader picture of just how violent the impact was.
