Two men showed up at UofL Hospital by private vehicle Friday night after being shot in Louisville's Russell neighborhood, with one man wounded in the arm and the other struck in the shoulder and thigh. Louisville Metro Police say both victims are expected to survive, and no suspects have been identified as of Saturday.
LMPD officers were called to the hospital around 9:15 p.m. Friday after the two men arrived on their own, according to WLKY. Police believe the shooting happened in the 2700 block of West Market Street, a stretch that borders the Russell and Portland neighborhoods in West Louisville. As reported by WDRB, LMPD confirmed one victim sustained a gunshot wound to his arm while the second was shot in the shoulder and thigh, and the department's specialized Non-Fatal Shooting Unit has taken over the investigation.
Investigators have not released a motive or said whether the two men knew their shooter. Police are asking anyone with information to call the anonymous tip line at 502-574-LMPD, according to the same account.
A Neighborhood Already Under Scrutiny
LMPD's First Division patrols downtown Louisville along with the Portland, Russell, and Phoenix Hill neighborhoods, according to Louisville Metro Police. The shooting comes just days after federal and local law enforcement wrapped up Operation Silent Hammer, a 60-day undercover initiative concentrated heavily in Russell and Park DuValle that resulted in 52 indictments, 160 seized firearms, and 42 machine gun conversion devices, as detailed in prior Hoodline reporting. That sweep specifically targeted repeat violent offenders carrying a combined 200 prior felony convictions.
Just two blocks from Friday's scene, in the 2700 block of West Madison Street, 46-year-old Susie Coleman was fatally shot in June 2025.
Specialized Detectives Take Over
LMPD established its dedicated Non-Fatal Shooting Squad in June 2023, staffed by a lieutenant, two sergeants, 16 detectives, and federal ATF agents who undergo specialized homicide investigation training to solve shootings where victims survive, according to WHAS11.
Citywide Progress, Localized Struggles
Friday's shooting lands against a backdrop of declining gun violence numbers overall. Non-fatal criminal shootings across Louisville fell 25% in 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, dropping from 166 to 125 incidents, per data reported by LouisvilleKY.gov. Homicides fell 22% and non-fatal shootings dropped 28% citywide in 2025.
Yet the shooting illustrates that citywide gains do not mean every neighborhood is free of violence.

If suspects are eventually identified, prosecutors would determine appropriate charges under Kentucky law.
