The University of Akron enrolled 15,324 students in fall 2026, just six more than the previous fall. That marks two consecutive years of growth, but the increase in headcount was slight; credit hours and several graduate and professional categories rose more substantially.
The university’s two-year run of growth is its first since fall 2011, according to Cleveland.com. The report says the university has pointed to student retention, recruitment of adult and non-traditional learners, and demand for graduate and law programs as factors in the increase.
Credit Hours and Graduate Programs Show Momentum
Continuing student enrollment increased 1.9% to 9,949, according to the report. Adult and non-traditional enrollment rose 17.3% to 95 students, while new postbaccalaureate enrollment climbed 38.3% to 65. Continuing graduate enrollment grew 9.8% to 1,423, and continuing law school enrollment rose 18.8% to 354.
Credit hours also increased, even as the overall headcount changed little. According to cleveland.com, total student credit hours rose 0.9% year over year to 174,337. The College of Health and Human Sciences recorded a 13.8% increase to 27,282 credit hours; the School of Law rose 11.5% to 7,061, and the Williams Honors College increased 4.9% to 1,704.
Retention and Recruitment Remain Priorities
President R.J. Nemer said Akron is focusing on recruiting students in high-demand fields and helping currently enrolled students—particularly sophomores, juniors and seniors—continue toward graduation, the report notes. The university plans to seek a third consecutive year of enrollment growth in its next recruitment cycle.
National Numbers Tell a Mixed Story
Akron's gains come as national enrollment trends remain uneven. Total postsecondary enrollment nationwide rose 3.2% in spring 2025 compared with spring 2024, an increase of 562,000 students, according to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. In spring 2025, undergraduate enrollment specifically grew 3.5% to 15.3 million students, though that figure still sat 2.4% below pre-pandemic levels. Graduate enrollment increased 1.5% in spring 2025 and stood 209,000 students higher than in 2020, while community colleges and other public two-year institutions saw the largest undergraduate growth among major institutional sectors in spring 2025, at 5.4%.
Ohio’s Public Universities Showed Mixed Results
A fall 2025 comparison offers a statewide snapshot, rather than a decade-long enrollment series. The Ohio Capital Journal reported enrollment increases at Akron and seven other named public universities, while Cleveland State, Miami and Toledo reported declines.
The recent national increases follow a longer period of losses: U.S. colleges and universities saw enrollment fall 15% from 2010 to 2021, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, as cited in the same Cleveland.com report. Akron’s latest headcount increase is small, but it comes after years of national contraction and alongside growth in several of the university’s programs.
