A low-cost aircraft with two modes of travel

JH-2 is being developed by ASCEND, a UT Austin research group founded in spring 2024 by professor Christian Claudel. Claudel leads the Mobile Automation and Sensing Systems Laboratory in the university's Fariborz Maseeh Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering, according to UT Austin. The group has about 20 students each semester and is pursuing a target sale price of $20,000, a figure reported by the Chronicle as part of the project's low-cost approach.

The aircraft uses a parafoil rather than rigid wings. That design can reduce cost and storage demands, but autonomous flight requires the system to account for wind and continuously adjust its path. Research on autonomous parafoils identifies trajectory planning, wind modeling and real-time control as central engineering problems, according to MDPI Aerospace. The Chronicle reported that Claudel said companies have attempted similar parafoil drones without succeeding, underscoring the technical challenge facing ASCEND.

The competition’s immediate test

The local disaster context

For local context, Austin Emergency Management says the city's hazard-mitigation planning addresses threats including severe weather, floods and wildfires. The agency also publishes after-action reports following major incidents to document preparation, response and recovery and identify improvements. Those materials establish the hazards relevant to JH-2's proposed emergency-response role, but do not by themselves show that the vehicle has been used in a disaster.

ASCEND was one of 22 Stage One winners when that phase ended in December 2024, but JH-2 was not ready for the September 2025 Stage Two deadline, the Chronicle reports. GoAERO announced in December 2025 that eight teams had received a total of $320,000 for Stage Two prototype development. The winners included teams from Cranfield University, TU Delft, TU Munich and Texas A&M, according to Aerospace Innovations.

GoAERO describes itself as a three-year international competition for emergency-response aircraft. Its final event is scheduled for April 2027 at NASA's Ames Research Center, where finalists are expected to fly missions involving a 125-pound manikin for a chance at the $1 million top prize, according to the competition's official materials and Nextgov/FCW. ASCEND's pending video is therefore a qualification step, not evidence that the team has already secured a place in the final demonstration.

Another UT Austin approach

A separate UT Austin entry, developed with LIFT Aircraft and the Texas Aerial Robotics lab, is pursuing HEXA Cargo, an 18-rotor electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft designed to carry as much as 400 pounds, according to the GoAERO Prize. Its rotor-based heavy-lift design gives the university two contrasting approaches to the same competition: HEXA Cargo emphasizes lift capacity, while ASCEND is attempting to combine ground mobility with a lower-cost parafoil aircraft.
