A woman was killed early Friday when the Volkswagen Golf she was driving slammed into a traffic signal light pole near Hemet and burst into flames, California Highway Patrol officials said. The crash happened around 2 a.m. near the intersection of State Route 74 and Ramona Expressway in the unincorporated community of Valle Vista, just east of Hemet.
According to MyNewsLA.com, the Golf was traveling at an unspecified rate of speed when it struck the pole. Paramedics pronounced the driver dead at the scene, and the cause of the crash remains unknown, CHP said. Riverside County Fire Department crews arrived to find the vehicle fully involved in fire and had it contained within roughly eight minutes.
Alcohol or Drugs Remain Unknown
Whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash remains unknown, according to the same report. The agency has not released the driver's identity, and the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with additional information is asked to call CHP at 951-846-5300.
The San Gorgonio Pass Area CHP office in Beaumont, which has held traffic management responsibility for more than 860 square miles of Riverside County — including Hemet, San Jacinto, and Winchester — since it was established in 1964 and relocated to Beaumont in 1996, is listed on the CHP website. Valle Vista itself is an unincorporated census-designated place with a population of 16,194 as of the 2020 Census, according to Wikipedia.
A Corridor With a Deadly Recent History
The crash lands on a stretch of road that has seen repeated tragedy this year. On June 9, an adult and a juvenile were killed, and three others were transported from the scene, in a three-vehicle collision at Ramona Expressway and Lincoln Avenue, as Valley News reported at the time. Just days before this latest fatality, a motorcyclist was killed near Acoma Trail in Yucca Valley on September 17, according to the Yaghmai Law Firm.
State Route 74 runs through Hemet and Valle Vista, passes through the San Bernardino National Forest and Mountain Center, and continues toward the Coachella Valley.
Riverside County's Broader Traffic Safety Crisis
The Valle Vista crash also fits into a grim pattern tied to the time of night it occurred. Data analyzed by Jacoby & Meyers found that while 5 p.m. sees the highest volume of crashes in Los Angeles County, 2 a.m. has the highest fatal-crash rate there, with 39.4% of crashes at 2 a.m. involving alcohol — though whether alcohol or drugs were factors in this particular crash remains unknown.
Riverside County's broader traffic-safety challenges remain part of California's wider road-safety discussion.

Officials have not been blind to the corridor's problems. Transportation improvements are part of the broader response.
Separately, State Route 74 remains part of the region's transportation network. The route runs through Hemet and East Hemet.
