Someone spent Saturday night tearing through Ancil Hoffman Park in Carmichael, knocking down ten light poles, ripping sinks off restroom walls, toppling street signs, and even balancing a trash can on top of a toilet. By Sunday morning, Sacramento County had shut down the entire 396-acre property while crews scrambled to assess the damage.
Sacramento County Regional Parks announced the major vandalism event Sunday, saying the destruction stretched across multiple areas of the park. County spokesperson Ken Casparis told ABC10 that repairing the damage will likely cost thousands of dollars, and he acknowledged a frustrating wrinkle for investigators: the park has no surveillance cameras that might help identify suspects. FOX40 reported that the destruction was discovered sometime between Saturday evening and Sunday morning.
Not everything shut down, though. The park's golf course and the Effie Yeaw Nature Center were both back open by late Sunday morning even as the rest of the grounds — including trails and picnic areas — stayed closed. County officials routinely keep an entire park closed after major vandalism so crews can check for exposed live electrical wiring from damaged light poles before letting the public back in, per the same ABC10 report. Ancil Hoffman will remain shut until that safety check and cleanup wrap up.
A Park That Just Got a Major Upgrade
The timing stings for county officials. Ancil Hoffman Park had only recently finished a multi-month renovation, fully reopening in August 2025 after crews repaved roadways, resurfaced parking lots, and planted native shade trees, according to Sacramento County, which marked the finished work with a public ribbon-cutting ceremony. Now, roughly a year later, that fresh investment is competing with a repair bill still being tallied.
The park itself carries plenty of local history. Ancil Hoffman Park takes its name from a former Sacramento County supervisor who managed 1930s world heavyweight boxing champion Max Baer, county records show. Within its boundaries sits the Effie Yeaw Nature Center, which stayed open even as the surrounding park closed.

Ancil Hoffman also includes trails within the American River Parkway system, a corridor that draws millions of outdoor visitors each year.
