A 16-year-old was shot at an apartment complex on Alcorn Drive in Vicksburg on Friday night and had to be airlifted by AirCare to a medical facility for emergency care. Vicksburg police are investigating the shooting, and no suspect information has been released.
Police have not disclosed details about a suspect or the circumstances that led to the gunfire. The teen's airlift by AirCare, as Vicksburg Daily News reported, points to injuries serious enough to require emergency transport rather than ground ambulance.
The shooting adds to a string of apartment-complex gunfire incidents that have rattled Vicksburg neighborhoods throughout 2026. Days earlier, police announced the arrest of three suspects — two 15-year-olds and an 18-year-old — connected to an August 18 shooting at the Waltersville Estates apartment complex that wounded three teenagers, the same outlet's report notes.

Vicksburg has also seen gunfire elsewhere this year.
Other neighborhoods have seen similar violence outside apartment settings. On July 4, a 19-year-old man was shot in the back while standing on a front porch on Locust Street by a suspect wearing a ski mask, in what Magnolia State Live described as an apparently targeted attack. Five days later, a 14-year-old boy died from a gunshot wound to the head on Farmer Street, an incident that investigators later determined was self-inflicted after recovering the firearm, according to Darkhorse Press.
Homicides Already Outpacing 2025
By late August, the Vicksburg Police Department had investigated five homicides in 2026, already exceeding the three homicides recorded across the entire city in 2025, according to Vicksburg Radio.
Two of the three suspects arrested in the Waltersville Estates shooting were 15-year-olds.
New State Law Pushes Teens Into Adult Court
The pattern of teenagers facing adult charges reflects a change in Mississippi law. Under Senate Bill 2710, original circuit-court jurisdiction applies to juveniles accused of specified acts involving violent offenses and firearm possession.
Whether a suspect has been identified in Friday's Alcorn Drive shooting, and the teen victim's current medical condition, remain unknown as the investigation continues.
