A 35-year-old woman was arrested on Lahaina Street in Waianae after she allegedly attacked a juvenile in an incident that appeared to follow a fight between two students from Waianae Intermediate School. Honolulu police said they received the assault report at 1:55 p.m. and took the woman into custody less than an hour later, just before 3 p.m.
According to KITV, the Honolulu Police Department said it received a report that a woman had assaulted a juvenile at 1:55 p.m. Thursday. District 8 patrol officers responded to the report, and Honolulu Emergency Medical Services was called to the scene as officers began searching the area for the suspect.
A Fight Near the School Escalates
Based on video of the incident, the station reported that the confrontation appeared to follow a fight near Waianae Intermediate School between two of its students. The mother of one of the students reportedly intervened because the other student was fighting her daughter, and in doing so allegedly yelled at and attacked the other student, per the same account.
Officers searched the area for the suspect before arresting the 35-year-old woman just before 3 p.m. on Lahaina Street. She was booked on suspicion of third-degree assault, the report notes, though her exact charges will be determined only after the prosecutors' office has reviewed the case.
Part of a Wider Pattern
Confrontations between parents and students at school have surfaced elsewhere in recent years. In 2022, a mother and daughter in South Carolina were arrested following an assault involving other students at a middle school, according to Hawaii News Now. And this year, a Texas man was charged with assault after allegedly attacking a high school girl who was participating in a school walkout, per WBRC.
No further details on the identities of those involved in the Waianae incident, including the juvenile's condition, have been released. The Honolulu Police Department has not indicated whether additional arrests are expected as the case moves to prosecutors for review.
