Central Maui's indoor sports venue is about to enter a soft-opening period. The County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation is inviting the public to a blessing ceremony for the newly renovated War Memorial Gymnasium in Wailuku this Friday, September 25, at noon, marking a milestone in a three-year, $32.5 million renovation project.
Mayor Richard Bissen will host the ceremony, which precedes the project's full completion, according to Maui Now. The gym will move into a soft-opening period once the blessing wraps up. Bissen said the renovations will give gym users a more comfortable, contemporary facility, per the outlet's report.
Built in 1962 for $700,000, the gymnasium has long served as a center of community sports and a gathering place for local events. It was originally budgeted for renovation back in 2022, and the overhaul that followed was extensive: Blazy Construction refurbished the interior with new flooring, ceilings and enclosed windows, installed air conditioning and a fire sprinkler system throughout the building, and reconstructed offices, locker rooms and restrooms to meet Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility requirements.
From Open-Air Gym to Hurricane Shelter
The project also reinforced the existing roof, walls and foundation, replacing the gym's original open-air design entirely. Crews installed a permanent emergency generator and cooling towers, enclosed the lobby and front restroom area, and made structural and design improvements so the building now meets Enhanced Hurricane Protection Area shelter standards. The site was also prepped for a future photovoltaic system, and workers installed structural anchors at 12 existing portable buildings on the neighboring Baldwin High School property.
The push for hurricane-grade shelter standards is not an abstract upgrade. Following the devastating August 2023 wildfires that destroyed Lahaina, War Memorial Gymnasium served as a critical emergency shelter, medical response center and primary drop-off hub for donated aid before supplies were ferried to West Maui, according to Honolulu Civil Beat. That emergency role helps explain why the county prioritized enclosed, air-conditioned, storm-resistant construction this time around.
A Complex Built to Honor the Fallen
The gymnasium sits within the broader War Memorial Stadium Complex, dedicated in 1965 to honor military veterans from Maui, Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi who died in service, per Wikipedia. With seating for more than 2,000 spectators, the gym stands alongside the 23,000-seat War Memorial Stadium, Maehara Baseball Stadium and Soichi Sakamoto Pool as the core of Wailuku's recreational infrastructure, Maui Now has reported.
The venue also carries some college basketball history. Before the Maui Invitational found its permanent home at the Lahaina Civic Center in 1987, the tournament was hosted at War Memorial Gymnasium in 1985 and 1986 as it expanded into an eight-team national event, according to the Hawaii Journalism Initiative's reporting on a related matchup.
Costs and Community Ripple Effects
Transit-oriented development studies cover the Kaʻahumanu Avenue corridor, according to planning documents posted on Hawaii.gov. The gym overhaul's price tag is $32.5 million. The county has also budgeted $7.2 million to rehabilitate the adjacent War Memorial Stadium track as part of a broader push to revitalize the entire sports complex.
The County of Maui's 99th fair, set for October, paused its adult horticulture divisions; student horticulture drop-off was at Queen Kaʻahumanu Center, while student art was handled at the fair trailer.
An Island-Wide Squeeze on Court Space
The gym's closure also landed at a difficult moment for Maui's sports community. It coincided with major overhaul projects at the Lahainaluna High School gym and Lahaina Civic Center, creating a severe island-wide shortage of indoor court space for youth and adult leagues throughout 2024 and 2025, the Hawaii Journalism Initiative reported. Teams across Maui struggled to find practice space while all three facilities were under construction simultaneously.
The War Memorial complex is set to host the Maui County Fair's Special Fair Day for people with disabilities and access needs. Friday's blessing ceremony comes just weeks ahead of the fair's return this fall.
