A suspect was taken into custody Wednesday after an alleged theft at the Sephora in USC Village led to a confrontation with LAPD and a short foot pursuit, according to Annenberg Media. The outlet reported that an LAPD officer was pepper-sprayed during the encounter and that police used multiple patrol cars and a helicopter while searching for the fleeing suspect.
Annenberg Media reported that the incident began at about 11 a.m. and that officers later detained the suspect after a pursuit toward Adams and Portland streets. The suspect was in LAPD custody while the case was being investigated; the report did not establish final charges or the suspect’s account of what happened.
Why students saw a police response but received no campuswide alert
USC officials told Annenberg Media that no TrojansAlert message was issued because the incident occurred off campus and the suspect was in custody, leaving no continuing threat to the university community, the outlet reported. That explanation addresses the alert decision, but it does not independently resolve the allegations in the criminal case.
USC describes TrojansAlert as an emergency notification system used to send safety information by text message and email, according to the USC Department of Public Safety. USC’s Department of Public Safety also provides a Clery-related explanation of campus warnings and emergency notifications at its alerts and Clery FAQ page. In this case, the university’s stated distinction was location and the lack of an ongoing threat—not the absence of a visible police operation.
A mixed-use site at the edge of campus
USC Village’s official site places the complex on West Jefferson Boulevard between South Hoover Street and McClintock Boulevard, according to its map and directions page. That placement helps explain how an incident near university housing and student-facing retail could be highly visible to students while still being handled as an off-campus event for alert purposes.
The location has also appeared in USC’s own public-safety reporting. USC DPS said a robbery occurred in the center of USC Village on April 19, 2025, reporting that a victim was surrounded by juveniles on bicycles, punched and robbed, according to the department’s incident notice. That earlier report is a separate case and does not establish a pattern or connect the prior robbery to Wednesday’s allegations.
What remains to be confirmed
The current report establishes that a suspect was detained after the alleged theft and pepper-spray encounter, but publicly available information cited here does not specify the formal charges, the value of the merchandise, whether the officer required medical treatment or how the case will be prosecuted. USC DPS lists 213-740-4321 for 24-hour assistance or crime reports at the University Park Campus and identifies the LiveSafe app as another way to contact emergency responders, according to its contact page.
