The Whirling Tiger is packing up its Butchertown home after five years, trading its current spot at 1335 Story Ave. for a larger property just down the block at 1028 Story Ave. Owner Mark Evans says the venue has simply outgrown its current footprint, and the move will finally give it room to breathe — including a beer garden and extended hours that its current residential-adjacent lot can't support.
The relocation is planned for late winter or early spring 2027, according to a news release cited by the Louisville Courier Journal. The new address previously housed Producers Veterinary Supply Co. and sits next to the former High Horse Bar location, putting the venue inside an already established stretch of Story Avenue nightlife. Evans said the Whirling Tiger has grown beyond initial expectations and that the new space will support that growth, per the same report.
The current building at 1335 Story Ave. carries its own layered history. Before it became the Whirling Tiger in November 2021, the space was home to the mid-century modern lounge Odeon and, before that, the historic Butchertown Pub, according to LEO Weekly. Evans and partner Alley McDowell bought the venue in November 2022 after original operator Against the Grain Brewery & Smokehouse abruptly shut it down less than a year after launch, the outlet reported.
Why the Venue Is Outgrowing Its Current Home
Part of the push behind the move is noise friction at the current residential-adjacent site, a challenge the venue has dealt with throughout its run, per the Courier Journal report. The new parcel at 1028 Story Ave. holds M2 industrial and commercial zoning in Louisville Metro, a designation that accommodates heavier commercial use and outdoor development, according to a Crexi listing. The new location is planned to include a beer garden, elevated stage programming and expanded hours.
Developer Andy Blieden, who is behind the 1028 Story Ave. property, called the relocation a positive step for the neighborhood and said Story Avenue is evolving into an exciting and dynamic part of Louisville, per the news release. Blieden has spearheaded commercial redevelopment across Butchertown for decades, having developed Butchertown Market and co-founded the Butchertown Business Alliance to advocate for the neighborhood's small businesses, according to KET.
One Last Holiday Season Before the Move
The Whirling Tiger isn't going anywhere just yet. It plans to stay open at its current location through the move and will celebrate one more Halloween and Christmas season on Story Avenue before relocating, Evans said. A related casualty of the transition comes sooner: the Whirling Tiger's coffee shop will close on September 19, allowing Evans and his team to focus on the venue and the upcoming move, per the release.
The venue's fall calendar is packed regardless. J Roddy plays September 19, followed by JMSN on September 22 and Millionaire$ on October 2. Nicole Atkins and Robert Ellis follow in mid-October, with Green Jelly on October 22, Pink Talking Fish on October 25 and Riff Raff closing out the month on Halloween. November brings the Dream Eaters and Tune-Yards, and a Grateful Dead tribute act, Same As It Ever Was, is booked for December 5.
Beyond the touring lineup, the Whirling Tiger runs a full slate of weekly free programming: Left Field Trivia on Mondays, Honky Talkin' with TLWG on Tuesdays, live jazz on Wednesdays, late-night DJs on Thursdays, DJ See Tai on Fridays and Wannadance DJs on Saturdays.
A Hub for More Than Just Concerts
Evans also manages concert programming for Zanzabar, an independent music venue and arcade bar in Louisville's Saint Joseph neighborhood, cross-programming both rooms to avoid booking conflicts, according to LEO Weekly's earlier reporting. That dual role has made him a fixture in Louisville's independent live music scene well beyond Butchertown.
The Whirling Tiger has also built a reputation as a civic gathering spot. It hosted the lineup release party for The Big Stomp, a multi-day Louisville festival focused on mental health awareness, in April 2025, according to Waterfront Park's event listings. LEO Weekly also reported on the venue during the 2022 holiday season.
The venue also weathered a serious safety scare in July 2024, when it temporarily closed and canceled a benefit show for the nonprofit Feed Louisville after receiving online bomb and violent terroristic threats. LMPD arrested a 24-year-old local man in connection with the threats, who was charged with felony terroristic threatening, according to WAVE News. The canceled benefit was later rescheduled and successfully hosted at the venue that August.
Part of a Bigger Butchertown Growth Wave
The Whirling Tiger's expansion plans land amid Adelita Mexican Restaurant's recent move within Butchertown. Adelita recently made a similar leap, relocating from a 765-square-foot space in Clifton into a 4,300-square-foot footprint on Mellwood Avenue. The moves involve independent businesses taking larger spaces within Butchertown.
For now, Butchertown regulars can expect business as usual at 1335 Story Ave. through the Whirling Tiger's final holiday season there, with the bigger, beer-garden-equipped version of the venue set to debut a few blocks away sometime in late winter or early spring 2027.
