A 57-year-old woman from Wilmington has died after being struck by a car while walking across North Dupont Highway in New Castle, Delaware, Thursday evening, September 17, 2026. The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. north of Stahl Avenue, and the woman was rushed to a hospital, where she later died.
According to NBC10 Philadelphia, Delaware State Police say a Toyota Corolla was traveling northbound on North Dupont Highway when the woman walked directly into its path. The 18-year-old driver, who lives in New Castle, was not injured in the crash, police said.
Troopers withheld the victim's identity because her family had not yet been notified, the outlet reported. North Dupont Highway was closed for roughly two and a half hours while investigators worked the scene, which was cleared afterward.
Collision Reconstruction Unit Takes Over Case
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is now handling the investigation into exactly how the crash unfolded. Investigators have not released additional details on visibility, traffic conditions, or other circumstances at the time of the collision.
Troopers are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or who has related video to come forward. Investigators asked that tips be directed to Corporal M. DiMaio at 302-365-8254, according to the same report.
A Recurring Danger Along New Castle Roadways
Thursday's death adds to a string of fatal and serious pedestrian crashes that Delaware State Police have investigated in and around New Castle this year. In July, 63-year-old William Collins of New Castle was struck by a pickup truck and initially reported to be in life-threatening condition, according to a Delaware State Police release; a separate NBC10 account later reported that Collins died the following day.
In May, police arrested a New Castle man in connection with the hit-and-run death of 60-year-old Teddy Huff Jr., also of New Castle, according to a state police statement. And in January, a 64-year-old man from Middletown was pronounced dead at the scene of another fatal New Castle pedestrian crash, per a police release covering that incident.
The evidence gathered so far does not establish whether any citation or criminal charge will result from Thursday's crash. No further updates on the investigation had been released as of Friday.
