The Charlotte service adds to a drone-delivery scene that Wing and DoorDash have established in the region.
Charlotte's Drone-Delivery Rollout So Far
The city's first taste of drone delivery came in May 2025, when The Arboretum Shopping Center in south Charlotte launched what it called the city's first-ever drone delivery service, through a new partnership between DoorDash and Wing. Under that setup, people within about four miles of the shopping center can order from more than a dozen restaurants via the DoorDash app, according to Wing. The restaurant lineup includes Charlotte favorites like Curry Junction, Matcha Cafe Maiko, Joa Korean Food and Panera Bread, per DoorDash.
That same Arboretum rollout also introduced DashMart by Drone, offering drinks, snacks and medicine for delivery in minutes. DoorDash and Wing first launched their drone-delivery partnership in Australia in 2022 before bringing it to the United States, and the partnership has completed tens of thousands of deliveries.
Walmart's Separate Push Into the Skies
Walmart has also taken steps to introduce drone delivery in the Charlotte area, partnering separately with Wing as part of a broader national expansion. Walmart announced in June 2025 that its drone-delivery push would extend to Charlotte along with four other cities, with the retailer saying the new service would launch at 100 stores nationwide, according to Walmart's own announcement. Orders through that program can be drone-delivered within a six-mile radius of participating stores, per WBTV.
The expansion is part of Walmart’s broader national push for drone delivery.
Lowe's Broader Tech and Workforce Footprint
The Matthews pilot arrives as Lowe's has been investing more broadly in technology, including two AI tools: MyLow, an assistant built for customers, and MyLow Companion, aimed at store employees. Together, the two tools have handled more than 25 million queries since 2025, per the Observer's reporting.
Lowe's, headquartered in Mooresville, North Carolina, employs about 300,000 workers companywide across 1,759 home improvement stores. The company reported roughly 11,000 employees in the Charlotte region in 2024, including about 5,000 corporate workers, according to figures cited in the Observer's report.
