A woman's body was recovered from the Delaware River near the 1600 block of South Christopher Columbus Boulevard in South Philadelphia at around 9:30 a.m. Monday, and she was pronounced dead at the scene roughly twenty minutes later. Philadelphia police have not released her identity, and investigators are working to determine what led to her death.
The recovery happened along a stretch of the South Philadelphia waterfront, according to NBC10 Philadelphia. The 1600 block sits next to major commercial plazas, including a Walmart Supercenter. Police have asked anyone with information about the case to contact the department, per the NBC10 report.
Marine Unit Handles the Recovery
The body was recovered from the river. The circumstances of the death remain under investigation.
A Waterfront With a Troubled Recent History
Monday's recovery adds to a string of grim discoveries along Philadelphia-area waterways in recent years. In August, authorities recovered a body believed to be that of Kortney Staples after she went missing from Chester, Pennsylvania. In March, police and medics responded to another waterfront recovery in South Philadelphia when an unidentified woman's body was pulled from the water near FDR Park and pronounced dead at the scene.
Those cases echo older ones that show how differently river recoveries can turn out. In July 2024, the Marine Unit pulled the body of missing 42-year-old fisherman Darnell Dogan from the Delaware River in Northeast Philadelphia, a case homicide detectives later investigated as suspicious after finding his wrists bound, according to CBS News Philadelphia. In July 2019, police recovered the body of 28-year-old Anjania Patterson from the river near the Residences at Dockside at 717 South Christopher Columbus Boulevard after a passing jogger called 911, as reported by The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Currents Complicate Investigators' Work
In this case, the circumstances of how the woman entered the water remain unknown. In July 2023, Matilda Sheils's body was recovered more than 30 miles from where she vanished during flooding in Bucks County. The same 1600 block where Monday's body was found has also seen violence on land: in February 2022, a 50-year-old man was fatally stabbed inside his vehicle in the parking lot of a Wawa store on that stretch of Columbus Boulevard, according to PhillyVoice.
For now, the woman found Monday remains unidentified, and the circumstances of how she ended up in the river are unknown. Police continue to investigate, and the circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation.
