Christopher Haug, 35, was sentenced Monday to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted first-degree murder in a Staunton, Illinois, shooting from February 2025, according to KMOV.
Basis for the charge
According to the account reported by RiverBender, the meeting was arranged to exchange personal belongings near Adams Avenue and Third Street at about 3:20 a.m. The woman told law enforcement that Haug assaulted her and took her purse and phone before shooting at her vehicle as he left. She said at least 35 rounds were fired at the car.
Madison County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested Haug at his Worden home shortly after the shooting, KMOV reported.
Officials’ response
Madison County State's Attorney Thomas Haine said the gunfire endangered people nearby and described the sentence as reflecting the seriousness of the conduct. In reporting by First Alert 4, Haine also credited the deputies, Illinois State Police troopers and investigators involved in the response and investigation.
