Joshua Weissman, the Austin-based digital media star whose cooking videos have made him one of YouTube's most recognizable chefs, is opening his first restaurant on Sept. 12. Ben & Lynn's, a casual fried chicken concept named for Weissman's parents, will take over a restored 1920s bungalow at 2600 E. Cesar Chavez St., bringing the 30-year-old creator's online following into a physical dining room for the first time.

Weissman announced the restaurant himself, and according to reporting by Austin American-Statesman writer Matthew Odam, the menu will center on a fried chicken sandwich built with homemade pickles and sauce on a toasted milk bun. The lineup also includes chicken nuggets, fries, and honey-dipped fried chicken glazed with Texas wildflower honey, gochujang, Fresno chile and garlic, along with rotating soft serve for dessert. Menu pricing posted on Facebook lists the B&L Classic sandwich at $11.95, with an optional YamYum sweet-and-spicy glaze for $1.95, chicken nuggets at $9.95, sea-salt extra-crispy fries at $4, and the rotating soft serve at $6.

A Bungalow Built for Big Crowds

The Statesman reports Ben & Lynn's will be open daily from 11:30 a.m. until late night, and according to official venue listings on Ben & Lynn's own site, that schedule runs 11:30 a.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday, stretching to 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday to catch East Austin's late-night crowd. The restaurant will operate out of roughly 1,800 square feet of indoor dining space plus another 1,800 square feet of outdoor patio, a dual layout that could help absorb the traffic expected from Weissman's audience on opening day.

That audience is sizable. Weissman has more than 10 million YouTube subscribers, per the Statesman, and across all his digital channels his combined following exceeds 22 million people. State alcohol-permit filings confirm the business is registered as Ben & Lynn's Chicken Austin LLC, with Weissman listed as the managing member, establishing his direct ownership rather than a licensing arrangement.

From Line Cook to Cookbook Author to Restaurateur

Weissman moved to Austin at age 18 and worked his way through some of the city's respected kitchens before building his online career, taking jobs as a prep and line cook at Uchiko and later as a lunch line cook at Odd Duck, according to the Statesman's reporting. Long before that, as a teenager, he started the blog Slim Palate and published The Slim Palate Paleo Cookbook in 2014 after losing 100 pounds. He went on to write the 2021 book Joshua Weissman: An Unapologetic Cookbook, which became a #1 New York Times bestseller, followed by 2023's Joshua Weissman: Texture Over Taste.

Not every corner of the internet has cheered his rise. Food-industry commentator Joe Rosenthal has accused Weissman of recipe theft, an allegation made per Rosenthal's own blog that the Statesman says it could not independently verify. Rosenthal has built a following as a watchdog on issues like labor practices, safety violations and uncredited recipe usage at operations including L.A.'s Sqirl and Bon Appétit, and food writer Soleil Ho once described him, in 2022, as a serial receipt-keeper. The Statesman also reported that Weissman's team did not respond to multiple requests for comment on the allegation.

The Bungalow's Revolving Door of Concepts

The address itself has a history of turning over quickly among Austin food ventures. The building previously housed the Japanese bento shop Bento Picnic starting in 2018, and later the high-end, 10-seat omakase spot Sushi | Bar Austin, which expanded into the space in 2023 before relocating downtown in late 2024, according to CultureMap Austin.

Ben & Lynn's arrival also lands amid broader upheaval along East Cesar Chavez Street, where Taqueria Chapala lost its lease earlier this year even as repurposed residential bungalows keep drawing new dining concepts to the corridor. Hoodline previously reported on another such conversion nearby when Austin Oyster Co. moved into an East Side bungalow, part of a pattern of shifting real estate dynamics reshaping the street's tenant mix. Ben & Lynn's will enter that landscape as Weissman's first restaurant, betting that his built-in fanbase can turn a converted 1920s house into East Austin's next fried chicken destination.
