Zara is more than doubling the size of its store at Los Cerritos Center, with plans to open a 45,000-square-foot flagship at the Cerritos mall in 2027. The expansion grows the retailer's footprint there from 22,000 square feet, and the current store will keep its doors open throughout construction.
The move was reported by Commercial Observer, which describes it as part of a broader push by Macerich to reshape the 1.3 million-square-foot shopping center at 239 Los Cerritos Center, near the border between Los Angeles and Orange counties. The property's biggest tenants currently include Apple, Nordstrom, MAC, lululemon and Harkins Theatres, according to the outlet, and Zara is already counted among the mall's top-tier stores, per the Los Cerritos Center website.
Zara's expansion at the Cerritos property fits into a larger pattern for the Spanish fashion giant, which is pushing into bigger, tech-forward stores across Southern California. In West Los Angeles, Zara's store at The Grove spans 2,400 square meters across two levels and includes an online-order collection silo with room for 650 packages, along with self-checkout counters and automated return points, as reported by FashionNetwork. The same outlet notes Zara operates more than 100 stores nationwide and is planning yet another opening, a boutique at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa next fall.
A Wave of New Names Joining the Mall
Zara's flagship isn't the only addition coming to Los Cerritos Center. Commercial Observer reports new leasing at the property includes Coach, Aritzia, Alo Yoga, gorjana, Samsung and Athleta, adding to the mix of retailers already drawing shoppers from southeast Los Angeles and Orange County.
Cider is also set to open its only Los Angeles-area brick-and-mortar location outside The Grove at the Cerritos mall, with an opening planned for the holiday season, according to the same report. Further out, DICK'S Sporting Goods is planning a location at Los Cerritos Center for 2028, per Commercial Observer's reporting.
Behind the Retailer: Zara and Inditex
Zara is owned by Inditex, one of the world's largest distribution groups, and its business model spans design, production, distribution and sales through its own retail network, according to WhatNow. The company recorded €27.778 billion in turnover in its last fiscal year, a 6.6 percent increase over 2023, and operated 1,759 points of sale worldwide by the end of 2024, including self-managed stores and franchises, FashionNetwork reports.
For Los Cerritos Center, the Zara expansion is being framed as a vote of confidence in the property itself. Stephanie Eglin, general manager of Los Cerritos Center, said Zara's decision to more than double its footprint at the mall is a testament to the strength of the property and its shopper base, according to WhatNow's reporting.
