A 1-year-old girl was shot early Thursday at a mobile home community on Old Michigan Road near Interstate 275 in Canton, and she was rushed to a hospital where she is now listed in stable condition. Police say the gunfire tore through the home itself, leaving the family’s residence pocked with bullet holes. No suspects have been named, and officers have not said whether anyone is in custody.
Shots Fired, Then a Scramble to Save a Child
According to ClickOnDetroit, police were dispatched to the 41000 block of Old Michigan Road after receiving reports of shots fired in the area, and first responders treated the child at the scene before transporting her to a nearby hospital. Accounts differ on the exact timing of the shooting: Fox 2 Detroit reports police responded to reports of shots fired at about 12:30 a.m. at 41021 Old Michigan, while the Detroit News reports the shooting happened at about 1 a.m. in the 41000 block of Old Michigan near I-275.
Fox 2 Detroit reports that suspects opened fire on the mobile home, and that officers who arrived on scene provided medical treatment before turning the child over to the Canton Fire Department, which transported her to the hospital. The outlet reports she is currently in stable condition at a nearby hospital. WXYZ separately reports that the 1-year-old was grazed by a bullet.
Dozens of Bullet Holes Left Behind
The scale of the gunfire became clear in the aftermath. Per the same Fox 2 Detroit report, the mobile home had at least 25 bullet holes from the shooting, while the child’s grandfather said he counted about 50. The home’s condition underscores just how close the shooting came to the family inside.
The Canton Police Department’s Detective Bureau is currently investigating, per the outlet’s report, but police have not released whether anybody is currently in custody or shared suspect information. The department’s detective bureau has not shared details around the circumstances leading up to the shooting, and ClickOnDetroit reports the investigation remains ongoing.
A Broader Pattern of Young Children and Gunfire
The shooting adds to a string of recent cases in Michigan involving young children and firearms. In a separate incident, two parents were expected to face charges after a toddler was found with a loaded, holstered handgun inside a Michigan daycare facility, according to officials cited by ABC News. Separately, a University of Michigan dashboard tracks a running count of the state’s firearm injuries and deaths, according to the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation.
For now, the Canton case remains open, with no word from police on a motive or on whether anyone has been detained. The girl’s family is left waiting for answers as detectives continue piecing together what happened outside their home overnight.
