A 15-year-old boy riding home from a friend's house along Henderson's Pittman Wash Trail was surrounded in the dark and robbed of his cell phone, his wallet, and the e-bike he'd bought in September. His mother, Lovely Jack, says she has lived in the area for a decade and never witnessed anything like it on the trails her family uses every day.
According to FOX5 Vegas, the teen was ambushed near Arroyo Grande Park while riding the Pittman Wash Trail, a route he and his mother describe as more than just a commute. Jack said her son shared that path with his father, who died three years before the robbery, and that riding it was his way of staying connected to that memory. A suspect demanded the phone and wallet, and the teen handed over his belongings after being surrounded in the dark, the station reports.
The e-bike itself carried its own weight for the family. Jack told FOX5 Vegas it was purchased in September as an early birthday and Christmas gift, costing $1,500. Losing it wasn't just a financial blow; it was a gift meant to mark a milestone, taken within seconds on a trail she now says she doesn't feel safe walking.
A Frantic Search Through the Neighborhood
After filing a police report, Jack didn't wait around. She drove through nearby intersections looking for the suspect herself and says she eventually spotted him riding her son's stolen bike near Warm Springs and North Arroyo, close to a Dairy Queen, while also in possession of a scooter. She called police immediately, but officers were unable to track the suspect down before he disappeared into the night, according to the station's report.
Word of the ambush spread quickly after Jack posted about it on social media. Other victims reached out with strikingly similar stories, she said, including one account of another rider targeted recently at the same spot on the trail. That rider is reportedly hospitalized awaiting surgery for a wrist broken during the attack, per the same account relayed to FOX5 Vegas.
A Commuter Corridor Built for Safety, Not Ambushes
The Pittman Wash Trail is a 4.2-mile paved path that follows a natural flood control wash through residential Henderson neighborhoods, connecting Pebble Road north to the Arroyo Grande Sports Complex, a 56-acre hub with lighted corridors, sports fields, and a BMX pump track. It's part of a trail system the City of Henderson has built out to more than 200 miles and 12 trailheads, as described by Vegas PBS.
Under Henderson Municipal Code Section 2.27, those city trails are open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., or dawn to dusk where unlit, and access is restricted to pedal-assist e-bikes, with throttle-operated e-motorcycles strictly banned and helmets required for riders under 18, per the City of Henderson.
Rare Crime in a City Known for Its Safety Record
Trail ambushes like this one stand out against Henderson's broader numbers. Threat analysis data compiled by Base Operations recorded just 34 robbery incidents citywide in 2025, out of 1,763 total violent crime reports, with simple assault making up more than 95 percent of that violent crime profile.
Nevada treats theft of property valued at $1,200 or more as grand larceny, meaning the taking of a $1,500 e-bike alone meets the threshold for a Category D felony punishable by 1 to 4 years in prison and fines up to $5,000 under NRS § 205.222, per Ferris Law.
FOX5 Vegas reports it reached out to Henderson Police for an update on the investigation but had received no response at the time of publication. For now, Jack says she's left watching her son navigate a trail that once connected him to his father's memory, now carrying the weight of fear instead.
