A 20-year-old West Harrison man was killed late Thursday night after crashing his car into a guardrail on the Sprain Brook Parkway, getting out to assess the damage, and then being struck by another vehicle just north of Tarrytown Road. New York State Police in Hawthorne say he was struck moments after exiting the Volvo.
According to Patch, troopers responded at approximately 11:40 p.m. on Thursday to a fatal motor vehicle-pedestrian collision on the northbound Sprain Brook Parkway near mile marker 7.0 in the Town of Greenburgh. Police say the young man had been driving a 2004 Volvo when he struck the center guardrail, causing the car to become disabled in the right lane. He then exited the Volvo and was struck by a northbound 2020 Acura, according to the same report. Patch published its report on October 23, 2026, before Newport Dispatch published its report on October 24, 2026.
The driver of the Acura remained on scene following the crash, the outlet reported. State police said the identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, leaving unanswered for now exactly how he died and whether any charges are expected against either driver.
A Parkway With a Troubled Recent History
Thursday's crash adds to a string of deadly incidents on the Sprain Brook Parkway this year. One person was killed in a single-car crash on the parkway between Jackson Avenue and Tuckahoe Road in Yonkers shortly after 2:45 a.m. on May 17, according to New York State Police, as reported by Daily Voice. That fatality prompted Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner to renew his call for state officials to install speed cameras on the parkway, calling it one of the most dangerous roads in the region.
“The Sprain Parkway continues to be one of the most dangerous parkways in the region,” Feiner said, adding, “Many accidents — some serious with fatalities.” A petition Feiner launched pushing for the cameras had collected more than 600 signatures as of that Tuesday morning in May, the outlet noted.
Other Fatal Crashes on the Same Stretch
The parkway's danger has shown up in other incidents reported separately. A three-car crash in the Greenburgh portion of the Sprain Brook Parkway shut down all northbound lanes early one Monday morning, according to The Examiner News. The crash occurred on Monday, December 28, 2020, between Jackson Avenue and Route 100B and closed traffic in the area until about 7:30 a.m., killing Randolph Castillo, 37, of East Boston, Massachusetts, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
A rollover crash with entrapment at mile marker 8.8 also proved fatal, according to the Elmsford Fire Department. Engine 137 and Fairview Fire Department's E175 were dispatched alongside Elmsford EMS and Greenburgh ALS to that rollover, and the vehicle's sole occupant was officially pronounced deceased by the responding Greenburgh medic.
No further details about Thursday night's crash have been released. State police have not said whether speed, road conditions, or another factor contributed to the initial guardrail strike, and the circumstances that led the Acura to collide with the pedestrian driver remain under investigation.
