What Florida Law Requires After a Serious Injury Crash
Under Florida Statute 316.027, a driver involved in a crash resulting in serious bodily injury is required to immediately stop at the scene and remain there until fulfilling the statute's requirements. The law defines serious bodily injury as a physical condition that creates a substantial risk of death, serious personal disfigurement, or protracted loss or impairment of a bodily member or organ.
This is not the first time a crosswalk crash has drawn scrutiny to this stretch of Clay County. Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles data shows pedestrian-related crashes statewide climbed to 12,760 in 2025, marking a fifth straight year of increases, even as fatalities and severe injuries from those crashes have declined for three consecutive years.
