A 27-year-old man was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison for distributing child sexual abuse material.
U.S. District Judge George C. Hanks handed down the sentence, according to Click2Houston. The outlet also reported that federal authorities separately described the sentence as 12 years in prison, a discrepancy that remains unresolved in the public record alongside the 136-month figure cited from the courtroom.
How Investigators Traced the Material Back to Berrones
The case began on February 7, 2020, when law enforcement discovered child sexual abuse material being shared through the Mega application, per the same outlet's reporting. Investigators traced that activity to a blog that gave users access to the material, and from there identified an email account belonging to Berrones that was distributing the content in an online chat group.
A search of Berrones's electronic devices turned up approximately 22 videos and 167 images of child sexual abuse material, the report states. Berrones admitted to using the internet to distribute and store the material, including images and videos involving toddlers, and he also admitted to accessing links containing the material through Discord, an instant messaging and distribution platform.
Guilty Plea Preceded Sentencing by Weeks
Berrones pleaded guilty to the charges on Aug. 27. At his sentencing hearing, court testimony described how he used online chat rooms solely to share child sexual abuse material, the station's report notes.
Beyond the prison term and restitution, Berrones must comply with restrictions designed to limit his access to children and the internet once he is released. He remains in custody pending transfer to a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility, which will determine his specific placement in the near future.
The FBI conducted the investigation that led to Berrones's arrest and eventual conviction. The case adds to a string of federal prosecutions in the region targeting the distribution of child sexual abuse material online, including a separate case in which the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas announced that a 34-year-old Willis resident pleaded guilty to production and distribution of child pornography.
