A 42-year-old man is accused of sending a threatening email to a Sour Lake police officer’s city email address, telling the officer to make peace with God and suggesting he die by suicide, according to an arrest affidavit. Darin Marcel Russell was arrested by the Texas Department of Public Safety on Tuesday and now faces a charge of making a terroristic threat against a peace officer or judge.

According to an affidavit cited by KENS 5, the email landed in the officer’s inbox on October 8 and alluded to alleged racism in Sour Lake while suggesting violence toward the town. The Sour Lake Police Department member reported the message to the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Criminal Investigations Division four days later, on October 12. Sour Lake is in Hardin County, about 20 miles outside Beaumont.

Tracing an Anonymous Email Across the State

Investigators determined the email address used to send the alleged threat belonged to a platform based in Germany, the affidavit states. From there, DPS investigators linked that address to an Instagram account containing posts showing handguns and a masked individual firing a handgun — an account the affidavit describes as anti-police throughout its entirety.

Investigators submitted what's known as an Emergency Data Request to Meta, a mechanism that allows law enforcement to request user data that would normally involve a court order when it believes someone is in imminent danger, per SecureMac. The same affidavit the station reviewed states that Meta confirmed the account’s registration email matched the one used to send the alleged threat; investigators’ further review linked the account’s IP addresses to a Google Fiber account tied to a home in the 400 block of Zephyr in Windcrest.

A Phrase With a Dark National Echo

A Phrase With a Dark National Echo The Instagram account also displayed the phrase “deny, defend, and depose.” KENS 5 reported that the phrase echoes language tied to the December 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, when cartridge cases at the crime scene were inscribed with the words “delay, deny, and depose,” as reported by the Associated Press at the time. The related phrase “Delay, Deny, Defend” traces back further still — it was the title of a 2010 book by Rutgers Law professor Jay M. Feinman critiquing tactics insurers allegedly use to minimize claim payouts, according to Wikipedia.

From the Instagram account, the affidavit states investigators linked Russell to a Microsoft account connected to the initial email sent to the Sour Lake Police Department, then confirmed his connection to the Windcrest address through a driver's license search.

Bond Set at $30,000

Russell faces a charge of making a terroristic threat against a peace officer or judge. Bexar County online court records show Russell's bond was set at $30,000.

The Sour Lake Police Department member reported the email to the Texas Department of Public Safety's Criminal Investigations Division. It is not yet known whether additional digital evidence or firearms were recovered during Russell's arrest, or whether his defense will challenge the IP tracing or the intent behind the email, according to the affidavit.
