A five-year-old boy remained in critical condition Sunday night after being struck by an SUV in Garland, Texas, with police saying he ran into the roadway before the crash. Officers found him unconscious near the intersection of Broadway Boulevard and Tacoma Drive and rushed him to a local hospital, where his condition had not been updated as of Sunday night.
Garland Police Department officers were called to the scene around 1:30 p.m. Sunday after the boy ran onto the roadway and was hit by an SUV traveling south on Broadway Boulevard, according to WFAA. Investigators believe the boy darted into traffic, and as cedarnews.net reports, officers arrived to find him already unconscious on the pavement.
Driver Stayed at the Scene, Police Say
The SUV driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, per the same account. Based on the information gathered so far, police said they do not expect to file charges against the driver, though the investigation remains ongoing.
Southbound lanes of Broadway Boulevard were closed for much of the afternoon and into the evening as investigators worked the scene, according to the station's report. Police have not released the boy's identity.
A Pattern of Child Pedestrian Crashes Around North Texas
Sunday's crash adds to a string of recent incidents involving children struck by vehicles across the region. In Garland itself, a teen was killed and another injured in a crash involving two pedestrians last year, according to FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth. In August, a child was critically injured in Dallas after a fleeing suspect caused a crash with another vehicle, CBS Texas reported at the time.
Elsewhere in the state, a child was hospitalized earlier this month after being struck by a vehicle in a library parking lot on San Antonio's Northwest Side, with the driver still at large, according to KSAT. A six-year-old boy was also seriously hurt in an auto-pedestrian crash in north Harris County, per CW39.
For now, Garland police continue to investigate Sunday's crash near Broadway Boulevard and Tacoma Drive, with no update yet on the boy's condition or identity.
