Nearly two months after gunfire erupted in a parking lot near the Hampton-Newport News border, killing a 25-year-old man and wounding another, Hampton police say they still have not identified a suspect. Officers responded to a shots-fired call just before 2 a.m. on Aug. 16 at the Newmarket Square parking lot, where they found Kamaar Robinson suffering from fatal injuries.
According to WAVY.com, Robinson was killed in a shooting that involved more than 50 rounds fired, a detail that underscores how chaotic the scene must have been. Detectives have said multiple vehicles were struck by gunfire, and numerous people were in the area when the shots rang out, according to Hampton Detective Jaquan Loney. A second person was also injured in the shooting, according to wtkr.com.
Accounts of exactly how many rounds were fired versus recovered have varied slightly across outlets. WAVY.com's headline described more than 50 rounds fired, while wtkr.com reported that fifty rounds were recovered from the scene, and 13newsnow.com similarly reported that investigators recovered firearms at the scene and found about 50 rounds. Either way, the volume of gunfire led detectives to suspect there were multiple shooters, per wtkr.com's reporting, and investigators believe multiple suspects were involved.
A Parking Lot Straddling Two Jurisdictions
The shooting occurred near the city line between Hampton and Newport News, a geographic quirk that has shaped how the case is being handled. Because the Newmarket Square parking lot itself falls within Hampton's jurisdiction, Hampton police are leading the investigation, even though police say the crowd connected to the shooting had come from The Alley, a nightlife spot in Newport News. According to the Daily Press, the shooting happened in the parking lot of The Alley, a nightclub at 100 Newmarket Square near the Hampton-Newport News border.
Newport News police are assisting with the investigation because the club sits within that city's limits. Police said many potential witnesses were inside The Alley when the shooting happened and may have limited information about what actually occurred outside. Bullet holes could also be seen in vehicles in the area, 13newsnow.com reported in its initial coverage of the shooting.
No Suspects, But a Possible Connection
Detectives have said they believe the suspects and victim may have been known to one another, though as of the Friday referenced in wtkr.com's report, detectives did not have any suspects, even though multiple people had been detained and released during the investigation. Police have not released details about what led to the deadly confrontation, and the investigation remains ongoing, according to 13newsnow.com.
Detective Loney said Robinson's family is grieving and asked anyone with information to come forward to help bring the family closure. Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
A Shooting Against a Backdrop of Falling Violent Crime
The case comes even as gun violence figures across the region have generally trended downward this year. In Newport News, homicides were down 9% during the first seven months of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, while non-fatal shootings fell 54% over that same stretch, according to data discussed by the Newport News police chief and mayor and reported by WAVY.com.
Those citywide trends offer little comfort to Robinson's family or to a neighborhood still waiting for answers. Two months after the shooting, Hampton police have not announced any arrests or charges, and the case remains open as detectives continue to appeal for witnesses who may have seen what happened in the moments before the gunfire started.
