A 68-year-old inmate at the Lancaster County Detention Center collapsed in a hallway early Wednesday morning while being escorted to a routine nurse check, and died shortly after arriving at a medical facility. Jail personnel reported the medical emergency to Lancaster County Public Safety Communications around 4:56 a.m., setting off a response that now has state investigators and the county coroner examining what happened.
According to qcnews.com, the inmate was being escorted by correctional officers to the nurse’s station for a scheduled routine check when he collapsed in the hallway. Corrections staff attempted to render aid before EMS arrived on scene, the outlet reported, and the inmate was ultimately transported to a medical facility, where he died shortly after arriving, per a statement from the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office SC.
SLED and Coroner Take Over the Investigation
The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division was immediately notified and sent investigators to the detention center to investigate the death, the same qcnews.com report states. The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office also responded to the medical facility to begin its own investigation and will schedule an autopsy to determine the cause of death, according to the outlet’s reporting.
The sheriff’s office said it will not release the inmate’s name and additional details at this time, and directed further questions to SLED and the coroner’s office. Sheriff Barry Faile said he was saddened by the man’s death and extended prayers and condolences to the family, adding that the investigation was immediately turned over to SLED and the coroner under department policy. “We have and will continue to provide these agencies all the information we have on this incident and will fully cooperate with their investigation,” Faile said, per the station’s report.
Part of a Broader Pattern in South Carolina Jails
This is not the first in-custody death to draw SLED involvement in the region this year. In Chesterfield County, SLED investigated after an inmate was found dead inside a cell at the detention center there, with wpde.com reporting that Sheriff Cambo Streater was notified around 11:39 a.m. that the inmate, who had been housed alone, had been found deceased. That sheriff’s office likewise said it would fully cooperate with the state investigation.
A similar case unfolded in York County in June, where a 40-year-old man who had been in custody for three days died after detention officers found him not breathing around 6:30 a.m., according to heraldonline.com. Sheriff Tony Breeden notified SLED and, following office policy, requested an outside investigation. That outlet noted it was York County’s first in-custody death of 2026, after three inmate deaths there in 2025.
No cause or manner of death has been determined in the Lancaster County case, and the sheriff’s office has not released the inmate’s identity or any other identifying details.
