A 76-year-old man has died after firefighters found him unresponsive inside a burning home in Haddon Heights, New Jersey. Crews discovered the man in the kitchen of the house, where he was pronounced dead, and authorities say the fire is not believed to be suspicious.
According to NBC Philadelphia, the unidentified man was found unresponsive by firefighters inside the home and was pronounced dead after being located in the kitchen. The station reported that crews responded to the 1600 block of W. High Street just after 5 p.m. NJ PEN, however, identified the fire as occurring in the 900 block of West High Street — a discrepancy that remains unresolved between the two accounts.
Damage Was Contained, Fire Not Considered Suspicious
The home sustained fire and smoke damage but was not completely destroyed, per the same NBC Philadelphia report. Authorities said the fire is not believed to be suspicious, Haddon Heights' hometown outlet noted in its coverage of the blaze.
No further details on the man's identity, the exact timeline of the fire, or the agencies that responded have been released. The scene was documented in a photo credited to Matt Skoufalos.
Part of a Troubling Pattern in South Jersey and Beyond
The Haddon Heights death follows other fatal house fires reported in nearby communities. NJ PEN previously reported on a fatal house fire in Audubon that killed a resident there, and a separate report from nj.com said an adult resident was found dead inside a Neptune City home after firefighters brought that blaze under control.
Fatal house fires remain a persistent risk nationally. Federal data from the U.S. Fire Administration shows that in 2023, the national average for residential structure fire casualties was 5.8 deaths and 19.7 injuries per 1,000 fires, compared to 2.1 deaths and 6.4 injuries per 1,000 fires across all fire types.
