A 77-year-old man is dead after his car crossed into oncoming traffic and slammed head-on into a truck on Jefferson Avenue in Hopewell Township Thursday night around 11:58 p.m., according to Pennsylvania State Police. The man was heading west on the roadway near 3400 Jefferson Avenue when he crossed into the eastbound lane and struck the truck, troopers said. He was flown to a hospital, where he later died.
According to WTAE, the man's identity has not yet been released, and the condition of the truck driver remains unknown. State police were called to the scene on October 1 to investigate the two-vehicle crash, which closed down the rural stretch of road in Washington County. Pennsylvania State Police handle crash response and traffic enforcement in Hopewell Township because the municipality has no local police department of its own, relying instead on Troop B coverage, as explained by the Observer-Reporter.
A Road With a History of Head-On Danger
In January 2025, a head-on collision in the 4900 block of the same road sent two people to the hospital, and the road was blocked while crews cleaned up, according to WPXI. Jefferson Avenue, also designated State Route 844, has long served as a key connecting route between West Middletown and the City of Washington, a rural corridor documented in regional history by the Observer-Reporter.
The road is maintained under PennDOT District 12 operations and periodically sees routine single-lane maintenance restrictions along its rural segments, per a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania maintenance update. Severe weather has also created hazards along the corridor in the past, with localized flooding having forced road closures on Route 844 in prior years, as previously reported by WPXI.
Pennsylvania Traffic Fatalities
Statewide, traffic fatalities in Pennsylvania fell to 1,047 in 2025, the lowest annual total since record-keeping began in 1928, according to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
No further details on the cause of the crossover or the identity of the victim had been released as of Thursday. The Washington County Coroner's office had not publicly confirmed the man's identity, and the truck driver's medical status remained unreported.
