A 78-year-old man was stabbed once in the abdomen in front of 1822 Delancey Place in Van Nest on Wednesday, in what police sources described as an unprovoked attack. He was rushed to Jacobi Hospital and is expected to recover, according to investigators.
Details of the attack remain limited. As reported by News 12 Brooklyn, police sources said the attacker was last seen wearing a light-colored sweatshirt, blue jeans and white sneakers. No description of a motive or any interaction between the victim and his attacker before the stabbing has been released.
The attack adds to a string of unsettling violence reported in the neighborhood this year. The outlet's report notes that a 31-year-old man was slashed in the arm with an unknown sharp object aboard a 2 train in Van Nest on August 25, an incident that, like Wednesday's stabbing, involved a stranger wielding a blade in a public setting.
A Troubling Pattern for Bronx Seniors
Wednesday's stabbing also echoes another case from elsewhere in the borough. Police were searching for a suspect in the fatal stabbing of a Bronx senior citizen inside his own Morris Heights apartment, the same outlet has reported, though that case involved a different victim, location and circumstances.
Crime data for the area paints a mixed picture that is difficult to pin down with precision. A weekly report from the 49th Precinct covering September 7 through September 13 and a citywide CompStat report for the same period, both published by the NYPD, track complaint categories including murder, robbery, felony assault, burglary and grand larceny, though the available figures don't specify totals for stabbings or for Van Nest specifically.
A longer-term trend has drawn attention from local officials. The Bronx Times reported that felony assaults across the borough rose 5.4%, from 652 cases in 2024 to 687 in 2025, with the increase reflected most heavily in the 49th Precinct, which covers Van Nest.
No Arrest Reported Yet
As of now, no suspect has been publicly identified in connection with Wednesday's stabbing. Residents on Delancey Place and the surrounding blocks are left with only the vague description police sources provided of the attacker's clothing as the search continues.
